What is an entity in SEO?

An entity is a single, well-defined thing that exists in the world: a company, a person, a city, a book, a medical condition. Search engines model entities so they can understand what a query or page is about beyond the literal words. "Apple" the fruit and "Apple" the company share a name but are different entities.

Google summed up the shift in 2012, when it launched its Knowledge Graph, with the phrase "things, not strings." Instead of matching keywords, Google tries to work out which things a page discusses and how they relate. Your business, your products and your authors are entities too, and making them easy to identify is part of modern SEO.

How a site signals its entities

  • Consistent names. Use the same business name, product names and author names everywhere. Variations make it harder to tie mentions together.
  • Organization and Person markup. Structured data states plainly who is behind the site, with a logo, URL and contact details.
  • sameAs links. Point your Organization or Person markup at official profiles elsewhere, so search engines can connect them.
  • Consistent contact details across listings, which for local businesses is NAP consistency.
  • A real About page that describes who you are in plain language.

Why entities matter for AI answers

Answer engines and AI features in search build responses from sources they can identify and attribute. A brand that is clearly defined, consistently named and described the same way across the web is easier to recognize and to cite than one that is ambiguous. This isn't a trick; it's the same clarity that helps a person understand who you are. It also connects to topical authority: covering a subject's related entities thoroughly shows you understand the subject.

In a WordPress site

Hydrogen SEO's Schema screen holds your Organization, or the Person behind a personal site, with name, logo, URL and contact details. Its sameAs list combines the URLs you enter there with the social profiles from the Social screen, with duplicates removed. Fill it with real, official profiles only. For individual authors, ProfilePage and Person markup do the same job at the author level.

Common questions

Is an entity the same as a keyword?

No. A keyword is a string of words someone types. An entity is the thing those words refer to, and several keywords can point to the same entity.

Does my small business count as an entity?

Yes. Any clearly identifiable business can be an entity. Consistent details and Organization or LocalBusiness markup help search engines recognize it.

Do I need a Wikipedia page to be an entity?

No. Wikipedia is one source search engines use, but businesses and people are recognized from many sources, including their own sites and listings.
