The 2026 WordPress SEO Checklist: The Things Most Sites Still Get Wrong
Every on-page, technical and AI-search task that moves the needle, in the order to do them - with the ones people skip called out.
In this article 7 sections
A complete WordPress SEO checklist in 2026 covers six layers: initial setup, on-page optimization, technical SEO, schema markup, AI-search readiness, and ongoing maintenance. Work through them in that order — each layer depends on the ones before it — and you will have covered everything that reliably moves rankings and AI citations, without wasting time on folklore. This checklist is the full sequence, with each item linked to a step-by-step guide where one exists.
Print it, work it top to bottom, and revisit the maintenance section monthly. Most items are one-time setup; the compounding value is in the last section.
1. Setup: the foundation
Get these wrong and everything downstream underperforms.
- Confirm your site is indexable. In WordPress, Settings → Reading → "Discourage search engines" must be unchecked. Sites launch with this on more often than anyone admits.
- Use HTTPS everywhere, with HTTP redirecting to HTTPS site-wide.
- Pick one canonical domain form (www or non-www) and redirect the other.
- Set a clean permalink structure (Settings → Permalinks — "Post name" suits most sites). Change it later and you will owe redirects for every URL.
- Install one SEO plugin — exactly one. Two plugins printing titles, meta and schema produce duplicate output that confuses crawlers. If you are choosing, our honest plugin comparison is criteria-first; if you pick Hydrogen SEO, the installation guide and two-step setup wizard take a few minutes.
- Set your homepage SEO — the homepage's title and description are your most-seen metadata. Guide: homepage SEO.
- Connect Google Search Console and verify ownership; it is your primary feedback loop.
- Capture some quick wins while everything is fresh — the first SEO wins guide lists the highest-leverage first-hour fixes.
2. On-page: every post and page
The layer you will repeat for every piece of content.
- Write a unique SEO title per page — primary keyword present, front-loaded, roughly under 60 characters so it displays fully. Guide: SEO titles and meta descriptions.
- Write a meta description that earns the click — a specific promise, not a keyword pile. Our post on meta descriptions that earn clicks covers the craft.
- Use templates for scale. Set title/description patterns with variables (%title%, %site_name%, %category% and more) for post types, taxonomies and archives, then override individually only where it pays. Guide: template variables.
- Preview before publishing. Check how the result renders in search with the SERP preview as you type.
- One H1 per page, then a logical H2/H3 hierarchy. Headings are structure, not styling.
- Answer the query in the first paragraph. Featured-snippet discipline helps humans, search engines and AI assistants alike.
- Add descriptive alt text to every meaningful image. Accessibility first, image search second. Guide: image alt text — Hydrogen SEO can generate it with AI per image or in bulk across the media library.
- Link internally with intent. Every new post should link to and be linked from related content, with descriptive anchors. Strategy: internal linking strategy.
- Set social sharing metadata — Open Graph and X card settings with live previews, so shares look deliberate. Guides: Open Graph settings and social share previews.
- Run the per-post analysis before publishing. The on-page SEO analysis checks catch the mechanical misses.
3. Technical: the plumbing
Mostly one-time setup, occasionally revisited.
- Generate an XML sitemap and keep it automatic — with image entries and exclusions for anything that should not be indexed. Guide: XML sitemaps.
- Turn on a video sitemap if video matters to your site, so Google finds embedded and self-hosted videos and can show them in video results. Publishers in Google News can add a news sitemap of the last 48 hours as well. Guides: video sitemap and news sitemap.
- Submit the sitemap to Google Search Console. Guide: submit your sitemap to Google.
- Review robots.txt. Make sure you are not blocking anything you want crawled; edit with validation warnings via the robots.txt editor.
- Set per-page robots meta where needed — noindex thin archives, thank-you pages, and internal search results. Guide: robots meta settings.
- Set canonical URLs to prevent parameter and duplicate-content confusion. Guide: canonical URLs.
- Manage redirects properly. 301 for permanent moves, 302 for temporary — the difference matters (301 vs 302 explained). Set them up in the redirection manager.
- Find and fix 404s so link equity and users stop dead-ending. Guide: find and fix 404s.
- Mind performance and page weight. Core Web Vitals are a confirmed (if modest) ranking input, and speed compounds everything else. One easy win: prefer tools that add no front-end JavaScript — Hydrogen SEO's entire output is server-rendered markup.
4. Schema: speak machine
Structured data earns rich results today and feeds AI understanding tomorrow.
- Add Article schema to posts — authorship, dates and publisher, machine-readable. Start here: schema markup overview.
- Add FAQ schema where you genuinely answer questions, and HowTo where you give real steps. Guide: FAQ and HowTo schema.
- Add Local Business schema if you serve a physical area — hours, location, contact. Guide: local business schema.
- Add breadcrumbs and Breadcrumb schema so visitors and engines understand your hierarchy. Place a visible trail with a shortcode or PHP function; the schema uses the same trail. Guide: breadcrumbs.
- Know the full menu. Product, Recipe, Course, Event and more are available; the schema types reference lists what fits which page.
- Validate everything you ship. Broken schema is worse than none. Workflow: validate rich results. For the strategy behind all of this, read the schema markup guide.
5. AI search: the 2026 layer
The newest section of the checklist, and the reason this is a 2026 list.
- Restructure key pages for extraction: direct answer in the opening paragraph, question-shaped H2s, self-contained sections. Full playbook: how to show up in ChatGPT, Perplexity and AI Overviews.
- Publish an llms.txt file — a curated, plain-text map of your best content for AI systems. It is a proposed convention, not a standard, but it costs ten minutes. Edit it from wp-admin with the llms.txt editor; the complete llms.txt guide covers what to include.
- Keep entity signals consistent — organization name, authorship, about page, topical focus.
- Run an AEO analysis to see how answer-ready your pages are. Guide: answer engine optimization.
- Baseline your AI visibility — record how ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google's AI surfaces currently treat your key queries, so future work has a before picture. Hydrogen SEO's platform monitors this across engines over time.
6. Maintenance: where compounding lives
Monthly, or after any significant content change.
- Run a site-wide audit for duplicate titles and descriptions, keyword cannibalisation, orphan pages, broken internal links, and metadata that is too long or short. Guide: site audits.
- Check your site health score across crawlability, performance, mobile, security, content structure, schema and technical health, and work the prioritized fix list top-down. Guide: site health score.
- Refresh aging cornerstone content — update facts, dates and screenshots on the pages that earn you the most.
- Re-review redirects and 404s after any restructuring.
- Re-check AI visibility against your baseline quarterly.
Working the checklist faster
Everything above is doable by hand. But a good portion of it — backfilling missing meta descriptions, adding schema page by page, chasing broken internal links out of an audit report — is exactly the bounded, repetitive work that Hydrogen SEO's agent can execute on instruction: tell Hydrogen AI "write meta descriptions for every post missing one" and review its work instead of doing the typing. It asks before anything destructive and shows every change; see the Hydrogen AI overview and our essay on agentic SEO for how that works and why the guardrails matter.
The plugin is free and every non-AI feature — titles, schema, sitemaps, robots and llms.txt editors, redirects, audits — works with no account at all. Create a free account when you want the AI tools and the agent on top, and start the checklist from item one today. Six months of steady checklist discipline beats any single clever tactic — that is the honest secret of this entire page.
