URL lacks descriptive words: when a numeric URL is worth changing

Why it matters

A readable URL helps people decide to click: it shows in search results as part of the breadcrumb, in shared links, and in the browser address bar. /cold-brew-ratio/ sets an expectation; /48213/ does not. A descriptive slug also makes a link understandable when it is pasted on its own, without anchor text.

Google has said words in the URL are a very lightweight factor. The main reason to care is usability, and the main reason not to overdo it is that changing URLs has real costs.

Which WordPress URLs trigger it

The check looks for at least three letters in a row anywhere in the path. With WordPress's standard permalink settings, most post URLs pass, because they include the post name or a word like archives. The ones that trigger it are usually:

• Date archives, such as /2026/09/. These are listing pages, and many sites noindex them anyway.
• Numeric slugs. A post titled "2026" or "404" gets a numeric slug, and some imports use IDs as slugs.
• Short-code URLs, such as /p/482/ or /go/12/, from redirect or link-shortening setups.
• Non-Latin slugs. Slugs in Hindi, Japanese, Arabic and other scripts are percent-encoded in the URL (%E0%A4%...), so the check sees no letter sequence. These are perfectly valid and readable to your audience.

How to fix it in WordPress

1. Use a descriptive permalink structure. Under Settings → Permalinks, Post name (/%postname%/) gives every post a readable URL. Changing this on an established site changes every post URL, so only do it with a plan for redirects.
2. Write slugs for new posts. In the post's URL settings, set a short slug with the main topic: cold-brew-ratio, not the-ultimate-guide-to-cold-brew-ratios-for-beginners.
3. Change individual slugs only when it is worth it. If a numeric slug belongs to an important new page, edit it. With Auto Redirection on in Hydrogen SEO → Redirections, Hydrogen SEO adds a 301 from the old address automatically when a post, page or term slug changes.
4. Decide what to do with date archives. If they are thin, noindex them rather than trying to rename them. Hydrogen SEO's Robots screen covers post types and taxonomies; date archives can also be handled through its developer filters.
5. Update internal links to any URL you change, so they point at the new address directly.

When you can ignore this warning

Ignore it for non-Latin slugs written in your audience's language, for date archives, for established pages that already rank, and for utility URLs nobody searches for. It is a note for new content, not a reason to restructure. If you do move URLs, read 301 vs 404 and the redirects guide first.

How to check the fix

Open the old URL and confirm it 301-redirects to the new one, then confirm the new URL appears in your XML sitemap. Rerun the free SEO audit on the new URL.
