We build Hydrogen SEO. The SEO Framework won our seven-plugin benchmark overall, winning or sharing seven of sixteen categories. Hydrogen SEO's case against it is narrower: a fuller default sitemap and an AI layer that The SEO Framework leaves out on purpose.

Measured on one WordPress 7.1 install (PHP 8.2, MySQL 8.0, Twenty Twenty-Five, 40 posts), each plugin alone with default settings, against a no-plugin baseline. Bold marks the better number in each row. Full method: how we tested.
What the numbers mean
On cost, The SEO Framework wins almost everywhere. It used +2.0 MB of memory against Hydrogen SEO's +4.5 MB, registered 8 hooks against 22, and ships a 2.9 MB package against 4.6 MB. Both create no custom tables. Autoloaded options are the one cost row Hydrogen SEO takes: +0.4 KB against +4.2 KB. On deactivation The SEO Framework restored the baseline exactly; Hydrogen SEO left 0.2 KB.
The editor is where the gap is widest. The SEO Framework loaded 77.6 KB of its own assets into the block editor, the lightest of any plugin. Hydrogen SEO loaded 700.4 KB in 2 files, because its editor UI is a single React bundle. That is about nine times The SEO Framework's weight. Dashboard HTML is nearly identical (130.3 KB against 131.2 KB).
Output is where Hydrogen SEO earns its place. Both print a meta description, a canonical, 10 Open Graph and 5 X tags. Schema is close: 9 types in 1,881 bytes for The SEO Framework, 10 in 2,071 for Hydrogen SEO. The sitemap is the real difference. The SEO Framework ships a deliberately minimal flat sitemap: 51 URLs, posts and pages only, no index file and no image entries. Hydrogen SEO's listed 72 URLs including taxonomy archives, 40 featured images and a lastmod on every URL. Whether you need archives and images in your sitemap is a judgment call; The SEO Framework's choice is an opinion, not a bug.

The SEO Framework has no title template syntax, so its separator, site name and tagline branding are rebuilt as Hydrogen SEO templates that render the same titles.
