These two sit at opposite ends of our benchmark. The SEO Framework was the lightest plugin we tested, adding +8.0 ms and no queries; Yoast SEO produced the most complete output, with 12 schema types and a 75-URL sitemap with images, at +39.0 ms. Pick The SEO Framework unless you specifically need Yoast's fuller sitemap, larger schema graph or ecosystem.
The numbers are from our seven-plugin benchmark, each plugin alone at its defaults on one WordPress 7.1 install. We build Hydrogen SEO, which is neither of these.

Measured on one WordPress 7.1 install (PHP 8.2, MySQL 8.0, Twenty Twenty-Five, 40 posts), each plugin alone with default settings, against a no-plugin baseline. Bold marks the better number in each row. Full method: how we tested.
What the numbers mean
The cost difference is roughly five to one. The SEO Framework added +2.0 MB of memory against Yoast's +10.5 MB, registered 8 hooks against 187, ships 2.9 MB against 21.0 MB, and creates no tables where Yoast creates six. Yoast's 3 queries are impressive for its size, thanks to those tables, but The SEO Framework added none. In the editor The SEO Framework loaded 77.6 KB, the lightest we measured; Yoast loaded 4,160 KB, the heaviest. The SEO Framework restored the exact baseline on deactivation; Yoast left 2.6 KB and its tables.
What Yoast buys with that weight is visible in output. Its schema graph had 12 JSON-LD types in 3,976 bytes; The SEO Framework had 9 in 1,881 bytes. Yoast's sitemap listed 75 URLs, including taxonomy archives, with all 40 featured images. The SEO Framework's is a deliberately minimal flat file with 51 URLs, posts and pages only, and no image entries. Both stamp lastmod almost everywhere.
Social tags are identical (10 Open Graph, 5 X). The one output row The SEO Framework wins is the meta description: it generates one by default, while Yoast prints none when nothing is typed and no template is set.
Beyond numbers, the philosophies differ. The SEO Framework prefers automation to configuration and has no ads or nags in its interface. Yoast has the traffic-light content analysis, a large ecosystem and more than a decade of production history. If your team relies on Yoast's content guidance, that is a real reason to stay that no benchmark captures.

Switching between them
The SEO Framework does not have a title template syntax like Yoast's, so your separator and branding carry over as settings rather than as templates, and per-post titles and descriptions are what matter most. Check The SEO Framework's current documentation for its migration options before switching, and verify titles and descriptions on key pages afterwards.
