Rank Math alternatives: six plugins measured on the same site

For most people leaving Rank Math, the best alternative is one that keeps a real dashboard and AI features while cutting the weight. On our numbers that is Hydrogen SEO (+12.9 ms, 1 query, no tables, against Rank Math's +36.1 ms, 16 queries and six tables), with SEOPress close behind if you do not need schema in the free plugin. If you want the lowest cost and can live without configuration, The SEO Framework and Slim SEO are lighter than both.

All figures are from our seven-plugin benchmark, free versions at defaults on one WordPress 7.1 install. We build Hydrogen SEO, so read its placement with that in mind.

Why people look for an alternative

Rank Math is feature-dense and generous, and it is still one of the heavier plugins we measured. The reasons people look elsewhere, as the data shows them:

  • Queries. +16 database queries per request, the second-highest in the field.
  • Tables and leftovers. Six custom tables (four belonging to Action Scheduler) and 11.6 KB of autoloaded options, of which 11.0 KB stayed after deactivation.
  • Editor weight. 24 files and 1,792 KB in the block editor, less than Yoast or All in One SEO but well above the light plugins.
  • Sitemap defaults. 59 URLs, with tag and author archives left out and no featured images, because its featured-image setting is off by default.
  • Setup gate. It prints nothing on the front end until you finish or skip its setup wizard.

Reasons to stay: Rank Math printed the fullest social tags we measured (11 Open Graph, 8 X), full sitemap lastmod, and a meta description by default. It has years of production use and one of the most configurable free tiers available. If you enjoy tuning settings and your hosting handles the queries, staying is sensible. Turning on featured images in its sitemap settings closes its most visible default gap.

  1. Hydrogen SEO

    +12.9 ms front-end, +1 queries, 0 custom tables, 10 JSON-LD types

Our plugin, and the closest match for someone who wants Rank Math's breadth without its weight: +12.9 ms, 1 query, no tables and 700.4 KB in the editor. It printed 10 schema types against Rank Math's 6, and a 72-URL sitemap with all 40 images. Rank Math still wins on social tags, and Hydrogen SEO is Beta. It imports Rank Math and Rank Math PRO data with a dry run and an Undo; see Hydrogen SEO vs Rank Math.

  2. SEOPress

    +24.5 ms front-end, +1 queries, 1 custom tables, 0 JSON-LD types

One query instead of 16, +24.5 ms, and 217 KB in the editor, with a restrained admin and a sitemap that includes featured images. It is a good fit for people who manage many sites. The trade is schema: the free version printed no JSON-LD at defaults, where Rank Math printed 6 types. See Rank Math vs SEOPress.

  3. The SEO Framework

    +8 ms front-end, +0 queries, 0 custom tables, 9 JSON-LD types

The lightest plugin we measured: +8.0 ms, zero queries, 8 hooks and 77.6 KB in the editor, with 9 schema types. It is the opposite philosophy to Rank Math, built on automatic defaults with few settings and no AI. Its sitemap is a flat 51-URL file without archives or images. See Rank Math vs The SEO Framework.

  4. Slim SEO

    +10 ms front-end, +2 queries, 0 custom tables, 10 JSON-LD types

A fraction of Rank Math's cost (+10.0 ms, 2 queries, 1.4 MB package, no tables) with more schema (10 types) and a 73-URL sitemap with images. It has almost no settings and adds no admin menus, which will feel bare after Rank Math. It printed only 2 X tags against Rank Math's 8. See Rank Math vs Slim SEO.

  5. Yoast SEO

    +39 ms front-end, +3 queries, 6 custom tables, 12 JSON-LD types

A lateral move on cost (+39.0 ms, but only 3 queries) with more output: 12 schema types and a 75-URL sitemap with images. Its editor is heavier at 4,160 KB, and it prints no meta description by default. Choose it for maturity and documentation, not to save weight. See Yoast vs Rank Math.

  6. All in One SEO

    +53.5 ms front-end, +22 queries, 9 custom tables, 8 JSON-LD types

Heavier than Rank Math on almost every measure: +53.5 ms, 22 queries, nine tables and a 511 KB dashboard. It does include archives in its sitemap and works without a setup gate, and its guided screens suit beginners, but it does not solve the problems that usually send people away from Rank Math.

Common questions

What is a lighter alternative to Rank Math?

Which alternative matches Rank Math's social tags?

None fully. Rank Math's 11 Open Graph and 8 X tags were the most complete in our test. SEOPress came closest on X tags with 6.

Does Rank Math leave data behind?

Yes. After deactivation 11.0 KB of its autoloaded options kept loading and its six tables remained in our test.
