What are AI Overviews?

AI Overviews are summaries generated by Google's Gemini models that appear at the top of some search results. They answer the query in a few paragraphs or bullets and show links to the web pages they drew on. They grew out of the Search Generative Experience (SGE) experiment and launched to all US users in May 2024, then expanded to many more countries and languages.

For site owners, AI Overviews change the value of ranking. A page can be cited as a source inside the overview, which can earn visibility and clicks, or it can rank below an overview that already answered the question. Google also offers AI Mode, a separate conversational search experience built on similar technology.

How it works

Google decides per query whether an AI Overview is useful, most often for informational and multi-part questions. The model uses Google's index and ranking systems to find relevant pages, then writes a summary with links. Google has described a "query fan-out" technique in which several related searches run behind the scenes, so cited pages may not rank highly for the exact query typed.

Google's guidance is that no special optimization or markup is needed. To be eligible, a page must be indexed and eligible to show a snippet. The same fundamentals apply: content that directly answers questions, is accurate, and is technically accessible.

Controls: the nosnippet, data-nosnippet, and max-snippet directives limit what can be shown in AI Overviews, as they do for normal snippets. The Google-Extended robots.txt token controls use of content for training Gemini models, not appearance in AI Overviews in Search. Clicks and impressions from AI Overviews are included in Search Console's Performance report under web search, not broken out separately.

Example

A search for "why is my espresso sour" might show an AI Overview listing under-extraction causes (grind too coarse, water too cool, shot too short) with source links to two coffee blogs and a manufacturer's support page. A page with a clear heading such as "Why espresso tastes sour" and a direct, specific answer is easier for the system to use than one that buries the causes in a narrative.

In WordPress

Nothing in WordPress targets AI Overviews directly. What helps is what helps SEO generally: pages that are indexed, fast, and answer questions clearly, with server-rendered content and accurate structured data. Hydrogen SEO outputs titles, meta, and schema server-side with no front-end JavaScript. Tracking citations in AI answers is coming soon to the hydrogenseo.com platform. For tactics, see AI search visibility.

Common mistakes

  • Blocking Google-Extended expecting to leave AI Overviews. It does not do that.
  • Assuming special schema is required. Google says it is not.
  • Measuring only rankings when the overview above them changes click behavior.

Common questions

How do I get my site into AI Overviews?

Google says there is no special requirement beyond being indexed and eligible for snippets. Pages that answer the question clearly and are already strong in search are the likeliest sources.

Can I opt out of AI Overviews?

You can limit what is shown with nosnippet, data-nosnippet, or max-snippet, which also affect normal search snippets. There is no separate opt-out that keeps regular snippets intact.
