What is answer engine optimization (AEO)?

Answer engine optimization (AEO) is the work of making your content easy for AI systems to retrieve, understand, and cite when they answer questions. Where classic SEO competes for a position in a list of results, AEO competes for a place inside the answer itself: being one of the handful of sources an assistant quotes or links. Some people use GEO (generative engine optimization) or LLMO for the same idea.

AEO is a layer on top of SEO, not a replacement. Most assistants that browse the web retrieve pages from conventional search indexes, so pages that are indexed and rank well are also more likely to be found and cited.

How it works

Nobody outside the AI companies knows exactly how sources are chosen, and claims of a guaranteed formula should be treated with suspicion. The patterns that hold up are consistent:

  • Answer first. Put a direct, self-contained answer at the top of the page or section, then expand.
  • Question-shaped headings. A heading that states the question makes the passage below it easy to extract.
  • Machine-readable HTML. Many AI crawlers read raw HTML and do not run JavaScript, so server-rendered content is safer.
  • Structured data. Schema markup states what a page is, who wrote it, and when, removing ambiguity.
  • Clear entity signals. A consistent organization name, real authors, and an about page make a source easier to identify and trust.
  • Crawler access. Check that robots.txt does not block the AI crawlers you want to reach you.
  • Freshness. Keep facts and dates current.

Example

A page titled "Coffee Grinder Guide" opens with a story about the author's first grinder, and the answer to "burr or blade grinder?" appears in paragraph nine. An AEO-minded rewrite adds a heading, "Should you buy a burr or blade grinder?", followed immediately by: "Buy a burr grinder. Burrs crush beans to an even size, which gives more consistent extraction; blades chop unevenly and produce both dust and chunks." The detail follows. The same page now answers the question in a passage an assistant can lift and attribute.

In WordPress

On WordPress, AEO mostly comes down to content structure plus clean output. Hydrogen SEO provides an llms.txt editor, JSON-LD schema for Article, FAQ, HowTo, Product, and other types, and server-rendered titles, meta, and schema with no front-end JavaScript. AI citation tracking on the hydrogenseo.com platform is coming soon. The AEO guide and AEO docs go further.

Common mistakes

  • Treating AEO as separate from SEO and neglecting indexing and rankings.
  • Burying answers under long introductions.
  • Relying on llms.txt alone, which is a proposal with limited adoption.

Common questions

Is AEO different from SEO?

It builds on SEO. The fundamentals are the same, but AEO puts more weight on direct answers, extractable passages, structured data, and machine-readable HTML.

Can I measure AEO results?

Partly. You can test prompts in assistants manually and watch referral traffic from AI tools in analytics. Dedicated citation tracking tools are emerging, and it remains less precise than rank tracking.
