How to optimize WooCommerce product pages for SEO

To optimize a WooCommerce product page for search, give it a descriptive SEO title and meta description, write an original product description instead of the manufacturer's copy, add alt text to every product image, make sure it outputs one accurate Product schema block, and keep the URL live when stock runs out. Set the titles once as a template for all products, then hand-write the ones that sell most.

Product pages compete with every other store selling the same item. What sets yours apart in search is the information only you provide: real details, your photos, your answers to buyer questions, and structured data Google can trust.

Step by step

1. Set a title and description template for products

Open Hydrogen SEO → Titles & Meta and choose the Products post type. A good title template puts the product name first, for example %title% %separator% %site_name%. For the description, %excerpt% pulls from the product's short description, so that field is worth writing well. Type @ in a field to see the available template variables.

2. Hand-write metadata for your best sellers

Open a top product, open its SEO Settings sheet, and write a title that includes what a buyer would type: the product type, the key attribute and the brand, such as "Linen Button-Down Shirt, Sand, Relaxed Fit". Write a description that gives a reason to click, such as a material, a size range or free returns. Check truncation with the live SERP preview in the sheet.

3. Write an original product description

Copying the manufacturer's description means your page says exactly what many other stores say. Rewrite it in your own words and add what buyers actually need: dimensions, materials, fit, compatibility, care, what is in the box. Put answers to common customer questions on the page. A thin product page with two lines of text is thin content however good the product is.

4. Add alt text and keep images light

Every product photo needs alt text that describes that specific image, such as "Sand linen shirt, back view". Gallery images showing different angles need different descriptions. For a large catalog, work through the backlog with bulk add alt text. Upload images at a sensible size; a 5000px photo slows the page and hurts Core Web Vitals.

5. Check the Product structured data

WooCommerce prints basic Product markup on product pages by itself. Test a product URL in Google's Rich Results Test and look at what is there: name, image, price, currency and availability, plus ratings if you have real reviews. Hydrogen SEO's Product schema can be added to a product from its SEO Settings sheet. Whichever source you use, the page should end up with one Product entity, not two, and the structured price must match the price visible on the page. Only mark up ratings that come from real customer reviews shown on the page.

6. Keep variant URLs pointing at the main product

Variable products can produce URLs with attribute parameters, such as ?attribute_pa_color=sand. These are the same page. Hydrogen SEO's canonical tag points each variant URL at the clean product permalink, so signals collect on one URL. Check a variant URL's source for rel="canonical".

7. Set the breadcrumb and primary category

Products in several categories go through their primary product category in breadcrumbs, set in the SEO Settings sheet. With breadcrumbs enabled, switch on Show shop page in Hydrogen SEO → Breadcrumbs for trails like Home › Shop › Shirts › Linen Shirt. See add breadcrumbs.

8. Plan for out-of-stock and discontinued products

A product that is temporarily out of stock should stay live with its status shown, ideally with alternatives and a back-in-stock option. Do not delete or redirect it. A product that is gone for good should 301 to its direct replacement or the closest category in Hydrogen SEO → Redirections.

Common mistakes

  • Duplicate Product markup from WooCommerce, a theme and a plugin all at once. Validators then report conflicting prices or missing fields.
  • The same meta description on every product because the template has nothing product-specific in it. Fill the short description.
  • Deleting seasonal products and recreating them next year at a new URL. Keep the URL and change the stock status.
  • Noindexing product pages because they are similar. Improve their descriptions instead.

Check it worked

After Google recrawls, Search Console's shopping reports, such as Product snippets and Merchant listings, show which products have valid markup and which have errors. The Performance report, filtered to product URLs, shows whether impressions and clicks grow over the following weeks.

Common questions

Should I use the manufacturer's product description?

Use it as a source of facts, not as your copy. An original description with details buyers need gives Google a reason to show your page instead of the many others with identical text.

Does WooCommerce add product schema by itself?

Yes, WooCommerce prints basic Product structured data on product pages. Check it in the Rich Results Test and make sure only one Product block describes each product.

Should I noindex out-of-stock products?

No, not if they are coming back. Keep the page live with the stock status shown so it keeps its rankings.
