How to rank in Bing
Ranking in Bing starts with making sure Bing actually knows your site, because many sites only ever set up Google. Bing runs its own crawler (Bingbot), its own index and its own webmaster console, and its results reach further than bing.com: Yahoo search results are powered by Bing, and Microsoft's Copilot draws on Bing's web index for its answers. A site that is invisible to Bingbot misses all of those at once.
Once Bing can crawl and index you, the work that ranks pages there is broadly the same as for Google: clear, useful pages that match the query. The differences are in the setup, the tools and a few habits Bing rewards, such as telling it about changes directly through IndexNow.
Where Bing differs from Google in practice
Bing publishes its approach in the Bing Webmaster Guidelines. They describe ranking in terms of relevance, quality and credibility, user engagement, freshness, location and page load time, and they warn against the same manipulation Google does: link schemes, keyword stuffing, cloaking and scraped content.
A few practical differences matter more than the guidelines' wording:
- Bing needs its own verification and sitemap submission. Google Search Console data does not reach Bing unless you connect it.
- Bing supports IndexNow. You can ping Bing the moment a URL is added, changed or deleted, instead of waiting for a crawl. Google does not use IndexNow; see the IndexNow entry.
- Indexing pace can differ. In our experience Bing sometimes indexes a small site more slowly than Google at first, then catches up once a sitemap is submitted and IndexNow is in place. That is an observation, not documented behavior.
- Bing Places is separate from Google Business Profile. Local businesses need both.
Set up for Bing in this order
- Check Bingbot is not blocked. Look at your robots.txt for rules that name
bingbotor block all bots, and check that your firewall or CDN bot protection is not challenging it. Paste your file into the robots.txt tester with Bingbot as the user agent. - Add your site to Bing Webmaster Tools. The quickest route is importing a verified property from Google Search Console; otherwise verify with an XML file, a meta tag or a DNS record. The Search Console setup guide ends with this step for WordPress.
- Submit your sitemap index. In Sitemaps, add the same sitemap URL you gave Google. Check it first with the XML sitemap validator. Hydrogen SEO also lists the sitemap in robots.txt automatically (XML sitemaps), which Bingbot reads.
- Turn on IndexNow. Many hosts, CDNs and WordPress plugins can send IndexNow pings. It involves hosting a key file at your root and submitting URLs when they change. Bing shares IndexNow submissions with other participating engines.
- Run Site Scan. Bing Webmaster Tools includes an on-demand crawl that reports errors and warnings such as missing titles, broken links and redirect problems. Fix the errors first.
- Inspect your key URLs. The URL Inspection tool shows whether Bing has indexed a page and any issues it found.
- Claim Bing Places if you serve customers locally. It can import from a Google Business Profile, which saves retyping and keeps details consistent.
Reading Bing Webmaster Tools
The Search Performance report works like Google's Performance report: clicks, impressions, average position and click-through rate by query and page. Compare it with Google's numbers for the same pages; large gaps usually point at a crawl or indexing difference rather than content.
Other reports worth opening:
- Backlinks, which shows the links Bing has found to your site and lets you compare against other domains.
- Keyword Research, based on Bing's own query data.
- The IndexNow section, which lists the URLs Bing has received from your pings, so you can confirm they are arriving.
As a rough, experience-based guide: after submitting a sitemap and enabling IndexNow, many sites see Bing's indexed page count start rising within days to a few weeks, with ranking data for new pages becoming meaningful over the following month or two. If the indexed count stays near zero after a month, go back to step one; a block somewhere is the likely cause. Review monthly, since Bing traffic on most sites is too small for weekly numbers to mean much.
Bing-specific slip-ups
- Assuming Google setup covers Bing. It does not. No verification means no Bing data and no sitemap submission.
- Bot protection challenging Bingbot. Aggressive security rules sometimes let Googlebot through and block other crawlers. Check your firewall logs for Bingbot requests.
- Throttled crawl rate. Bing Webmaster Tools lets you set crawl rate by hour. A setting left low from years ago can slow discovery on a growing site.
- Pinging IndexNow for every trivial edit. Submit URLs whose content actually changed. Mass resubmission of unchanged pages adds nothing.
- Different business details on Bing Places. Mismatched names, hours or phone numbers between listings confuse both engines; see NAP consistency.
Bing setup checklist
- robots.txt and firewall allow Bingbot.
- Site verified in Bing Webmaster Tools, ideally by import from Search Console.
- Sitemap index submitted and showing as processed.
- IndexNow key file live and pings sending on publish and update.
- Site Scan run and its errors fixed.
- Bing Places claimed for any physical location.
- A monthly look at Search Performance alongside Google's numbers.
Common questions
Is ranking in Bing different from ranking in Google?
The foundations are the same: crawlable, useful pages that match the query. Bing has its own index, its own guidelines and its own tools, and it supports IndexNow for change notifications, which Google does not use.
Does Bing traffic matter?
For many sites it is a smaller share than Google, but Bing's index also supplies results to Yahoo and grounds Microsoft Copilot answers, so being indexed there reaches more people than bing.com alone.
Do I need a separate sitemap for Bing?
No. Submit the same sitemap index you give Google. The same file works for both.
Can I import my Google Search Console sites into Bing?
Yes. Bing Webmaster Tools offers an import from Google Search Console that verifies your properties and brings in sitemaps, which is usually the fastest setup.
