How to rank in Perplexity: a playbook for getting cited
Perplexity shows its sources on almost every answer, which makes it the easiest AI engine to study. To be cited, let PerplexityBot crawl your site, make sure your pages load quickly and read cleanly without JavaScript, and publish reference-style pages built on specific facts. Open the door to PerplexityBot, then study the winners
- Allow PerplexityBot. Check robots.txt for any group or wildcard rule that blocks it. Perplexity says changes can take up to 24 hours to apply.

- Check your firewall. Perplexity publishes IP ranges for its agents and has documented allow rules for common firewalls, because bot protection so often blocks it. A rule that trusts the user agent alone lets impersonators in, so match the published ranges.
- Run 15 core questions in Perplexity. For each answer, open the full source list, not only the inline numbers, and log every domain.
- Tear down the winners. For each cited page, write one line on what it states that your page does not: a figure, a date, a step, a comparison, a definition.
- Fix the three biggest gaps on your own pages, using facts you can stand behind.
- Harvest the follow-ups. Perplexity suggests related questions under its answers. Copy them for each topic. They are a free list of the sub-questions your page should answer.
Pages Perplexity can quote
Perplexity reads pages live when an answer needs them, which rewards pages that are quick to fetch and easy to parse. In practice that means:
- The answer in the HTML source. Content that appears only after scripts run, or behind a cookie wall that covers the page, may reach the fetcher as an empty shell.
- Reference structure. Definitions near the top, spec tables with units, dated facts ("as of September 2026"), numbered procedures and short sections with clear headings.
- Primary information. Your own measurements, prices, case results or survey data. When ten pages repeat the same advice, the one with the original number is the natural citation.
- Speed. A page that takes several seconds to send its first byte risks being skipped by a fetcher working to a deadline.
Avoid splitting one answer across a carousel, accordion loaded on demand, or image. If a human needs to click to reveal it, assume a fetcher might not see it.
Tracking your Perplexity citations
Because Perplexity shows its sources, your monthly manual check is unusually accurate, if small. Log the cited domains per question and whether your reference appears inline or only in the full source list.
In analytics, visits with perplexity.ai as the referrer show which pages earn clicks. Compare those landing pages with your citation log: pages that are cited but rarely clicked may be answering completely in the snippet, which is fine for brand exposure but worth knowing. When forums or big sites beat you
Perplexity often cites community threads, large reference sites and review platforms. That is not a signal to give up. Read the thread or page that was cited: usually it answers a specific version of the question ("for a rental", "on a Mac", "in winter") that your page treats generally. Add a section for that version. If a review site is cited for "best X", make sure your listing on that site is accurate and current, since that page is now part of how Perplexity describes you. Beyond your reach
Perplexity does not publish how it selects sources. Answers shift with phrasing, location, the model the user picked and earlier turns in the thread, so a page can drop out without anything changing on your site. Perplexity says Perplexity-User generally ignores robots.txt because a person requested the fetch, so robots rules are not a complete control over what it reads. What you can shape is eligibility, speed and having the most specific answer on the page.
Common questions
Does Perplexity have a webmaster tool?
Not one that reports citations to site owners. Use your own prompt checks, referrals from perplexity.ai in analytics and PerplexityBot activity in your logs instead.
Why is a forum thread cited instead of my guide?
Threads often answer a narrow version of a question with first-hand detail. Add a section to your page for that specific situation, with concrete facts, and recheck after Perplexity has recrawled it.
How quickly does Perplexity see an updated page?
Perplexity reads pages live for many answers, so updates can show up soon after PerplexityBot or Perplexity-User next fetches the page. Timing is not published and varies.
