How to rank in ChatGPT: getting your pages cited in ChatGPT search

ChatGPT does not rank websites. When it searches the web, it writes an answer and cites a few sources beside it. To be one of them, allow OpenAI's search crawler, OAI-SearchBot, make sure your pages are well indexed in Bing as well as Google, and publish pages that state specific, checkable answers. OpenAI's publisher FAQ says plainly that it cannot guarantee placement, so plan to measure rather than hope.

Everything below is work a site owner can start this week. For how ChatGPT search gathers and displays sources, see RankWave AI's ChatGPT search page.

Five OpenAI-side fixes to make now

1. Fix your OpenAI rules in robots.txt. OpenAI runs three agents with independent settings. A common setup that stays citable while opting out of training looks like this:

code
User-agent: OAI-SearchBot
Allow: /

User-agent: ChatGPT-User
Allow: /

User-agent: GPTBot
Disallow: /

Drop the GPTBot group if you are happy for your content to be used in training. OpenAI says robots.txt changes take about a day to be picked up by its search systems. The robots.txt tester confirms which rule applies to each agent.

2. Let the agents through your firewall. OpenAI publishes IP ranges for each agent. If a CDN or security plugin challenges unknown bots, add an allow rule that matches both the user agent and those ranges.

3. Get indexed in Bing. OpenAI says ChatGPT search uses third-party search providers alongside its own crawling, and Microsoft has long been a partner. Verify your site in Bing Webmaster Tools (it can import from Search Console) and submit your sitemap.

4. Pick ten pages that answer buyer questions and make their facts explicit, as described below.

5. Set up tracking for utm_source=chatgpt.com in analytics before you change anything, so you have a baseline.

What to publish for ChatGPT questions

People ask ChatGPT for recommendations, comparisons, prices and explanations. The pages it can use are the ones that state those things in plain text:

  • Pricing pages with the numbers in the HTML, not in an image, a PDF or a calculator that only renders in the browser. Include what each tier includes and the date prices were last changed.
  • Comparison pages that name alternatives fairly, including where a competitor is the better fit. A page that only praises you gives the model little to work with on "X vs Y" questions.
  • Help and documentation pages that answer one task each, with version numbers and limits.
  • An About page and consistent profiles that describe what you do, where, and for whom in the same words everywhere. ChatGPT blends retrieved pages with what the model already learned, so contradictions across your site, directories and social profiles can surface in answers.

If you draft with an AI writing tool, including Hydrogen AI, check every figure and claim yourself before publishing. A confident wrong number is exactly the kind of fact that gets quoted back to a customer.

Checking whether ChatGPT cites you

Run your fixed prompt list in ChatGPT with search on, in a temporary chat so memory and past conversations do not skew the result. Ask each question twice and log the sources. Then look at analytics: ChatGPT adds utm_source=chatgpt.com to links in its answers, and the landing pages on those visits show which content is being cited and clicked. In server logs, ChatGPT-User requests for a specific URL usually mean the page was just read to answer a question.

OpenAI offers no citation report for site owners. Bing's AI Performance report covers Copilot, not ChatGPT. The measurement page covers the setup in detail, and the crawler entries for OAI-SearchBot and ChatGPT-User explain what each log line means.

Shopping and local questions

Product questions in ChatGPT are answered with product results built from structured product data and merchant feeds, not only from articles. If you sell online, that is a separate track covered in ranking in AI shopping answers. For local services, ChatGPT often draws on listing and review sites, so the accuracy of your listings matters as much as your own pages.

What you cannot control

OpenAI does not publish how it chooses sources. The same prompt can cite different pages for different users or on a second run. The model may describe your business from training data that predates your latest changes, and a third-party review of you can be cited instead of your own page. Blocking OAI-SearchBot removes you from search answers, though OpenAI notes a blocked site can still appear as a navigational link. There is no paid route into organic answers, and there is no submission form. What you control is access, accuracy and whether your page is the clearest source for a specific claim.

Common questions

If I block GPTBot, can ChatGPT still cite my pages?

Yes. OpenAI treats the training crawler and the search crawler separately. Blocking GPTBot while allowing OAI-SearchBot keeps you eligible for ChatGPT search answers.

Can I submit my site to ChatGPT?

There is no submission form for organic search answers. Allow OAI-SearchBot, keep your site indexed in major search engines, and let the crawler find you. Merchants can supply product feeds through OpenAI's separate merchant program.

Why is ChatGPT's description of my business out of date?

Answers mix search results with what the model learned earlier. Put current facts on your own pages in plain text, update your listings, and recheck after a few weeks.
