"At least one paragraph is long": Rank Math's 120 word limit

One paragraph decides the result

Rank Math splits your content into paragraphs, counts the words in each, and asks a single question: is any of them longer than 120 words? There is no partial credit. A 3,000 word guide with forty tidy paragraphs and one 130 word paragraph fails exactly like a post written as one block of text.

The message does not name the paragraph, so you need to find it yourself. The usual suspects are:

• the introduction, which tends to accumulate context;
• a definition or background section that explains several ideas at once;
• the conclusion, where summaries of every section pile up;
• text pasted from another document, where line breaks may have been lost.

Rank Math's tooltip explains its reasoning in plain terms: short paragraphs are easier to read and more pleasing to the eye, while long ones can put visitors off and send them back to the search results.

Because the result is binary, the test is also easy to re-check: fix the one paragraph you suspect, and if the message stays the same, another paragraph is still over the limit.

Why the bar sits at 120 words

Rank Math does not publish research behind the number, and there is no standard for paragraph length on the web. The figure reflects a practical judgment about screens. On a phone, a paragraph of 120 words already fills most of the visible area, and anything longer becomes a wall of text that readers have to scroll through without a break.

Other plugins pick different numbers. Yoast SEO warns at 150 words and turns red at 200, with orange in between; see Yoast paragraph length. The disagreement is a reminder that these are editorial preferences, not measured thresholds.

Google does not measure paragraph length for ranking. Its interest is whether the page serves the reader, and readable formatting is part of that only indirectly.

Breaking up a long paragraph

Paragraphs that pass 120 words usually contain more than one move. Try these, in order:

1. Find the topic sentence of the second idea and start a new paragraph there.
2. Turn comparisons into a table. "Option A costs X and does Y, while option B..." is often clearer as two rows.
3. Pull out steps or items into a list. A sentence with four commas is often a list in disguise.
4. Move asides into their own short paragraph, or cut them. Parenthetical detail is a common source of length.
5. Cut repetition. Long paragraphs often restate their first sentence at the end.

Read the result for flow. Each new paragraph should open with a sentence that stands on its own, so a reader who skims only first sentences still follows the argument.

As an example, a 160 word paragraph on choosing a grind size usually holds three moves: the general rule (finer for espresso, coarser for French press), the exceptions (beans, roast and machine), and a quick way to test your setting. Three short paragraphs, each opening with its point, read faster than one long one, and they give a skimming reader three places to land instead of one.

Long paragraphs that can stay

Accept the failed test when splitting would damage the text:

• Quoted passages from laws, contracts, sources or interviews, which should be reproduced as written;
• a single legal clause or disclaimer that must remain one unit;
• essays and analysis written for readers who expect sustained paragraphs.

Because the test is pass or fail, one justified long paragraph will keep it failing for the whole post. That is fine. The test cannot tell a quoted statute from a rambling introduction; you can.
