Yoast paragraph length: the 150 word ceiling and how to meet it

In Yoast SEO, any paragraph longer than 150 words gets flagged by the Paragraph length check. A paragraph between 150 and 200 words makes the check orange; one over 200 words makes it red. If none pass 150, you get "There are no paragraphs that are too long. Great job!"

Paragraph length is about how the page feels to read, particularly on a phone. It is not a ranking factor. Treat a flagged paragraph as a candidate for splitting, and keep it long if splitting would break an idea in half.

How the check scores a post

The check is driven by your longest paragraphs, not your average. One 210 word paragraph is enough for red, even if every other paragraph is three lines. The feedback tells you how many paragraphs are over: "2 of the paragraphs contain more than the recommended maximum number of words (150). Shorten your paragraphs!" The highlight button marks them in the editor.

The limit is the same for every language that uses word counts. Japanese is measured in characters instead, with 300 characters as the green limit and 400 as the red one. Yoast's check is language independent in the sense that it does not need grammar rules, which is why it appears in more languages than checks like passive voice.

Rank Math has a similar test with a lower bar of 120 words and a simple pass or fail; see Rank Math short paragraphs for how that one behaves.

Why screens changed paragraph habits

Print conventions allowed long paragraphs because a page of a book shows a lot of text at once, and readers expect sustained reading. On the web, and especially on mobile, a 200 word paragraph can fill the whole screen with no visual break. Readers who scan for the part they need have nowhere to land.

Yoast's own explanation is short: readers like bite-sized pieces of information, and long paragraphs discourage people from reading. The older principle underneath is the one taught in composition classes: one main idea per paragraph. A paragraph that runs past 150 words is often carrying two ideas, and splitting it at the turn makes both clearer.

The check also has no minimum. A post made of one-line paragraphs passes easily, even though it can read as choppy as a wall of text reads heavy.

Which long paragraphs can stay

Some paragraphs are long for good reasons:

  • Quoted material. A quoted passage from a law, a contract or a primary source should be reproduced as written.
  • A single tightly argued point. In an essay or analysis, a paragraph that builds one argument step by step can lose its force if broken up.
  • Transcripts and interviews, where a paragraph is one person's answer.

If the page is written for people who expect long-form reading, such as a literary essay or an academic piece, an orange light is a fair trade. On help articles, product pages, tutorials and anything read on the move, split the paragraph.

Splitting paragraphs the right way

Look for the point where the paragraph changes direction, and break there. Common break points:

  1. After the main claim, before the supporting detail or example.
  2. Where "however" or "but" introduces a counterpoint. The exception can be its own paragraph.
  3. Before a series. If the paragraph lists steps, options or reasons, turn them into a list.
  4. Before a quote or data point that deserves its own line.

Avoid chopping a paragraph into equal pieces by word count. Each new paragraph should open with a sentence that makes sense on its own; if it starts with "This" or "It" and the reader cannot tell what that refers to, the split landed in the wrong place.

An occasional one sentence paragraph is fine and can add emphasis. A whole page of them reads like a list of disconnected claims.

For comparison, Hydrogen SEO's SEO score does not measure paragraph length at all. Its readability part looks only at average sentence length.

One editor detail catches people out. In the block editor, a line break made with Shift+Enter stays inside the same paragraph block, so text that looks like three short paragraphs on screen can still be one long paragraph in the HTML. Use Enter to start a real new paragraph.

Common questions

Does Yoast count list items as paragraphs?

The check is aimed at paragraph text. Lists are usually short per item, so turning a long paragraph into a list is one of the easiest ways to clear the warning.

Is a 150 word paragraph bad for SEO?

No. Search engines do not rank pages by paragraph length. The check is about how readable the page is, especially on small screens.

Why is my check red when most paragraphs are short?

The check is triggered by any single paragraph over the limit. One paragraph over 200 words is enough for a red result.
