Missing favicon: how to add a site icon in WordPress

A missing favicon means the page does not link to a site icon, the small image shown in browser tabs, bookmarks and, on mobile and desktop results, next to your site name in Google. Add one with WordPress's Site Icon setting: upload a square image of at least 512 by 512 pixels, and WordPress prints the icon tags for you.

This is a low-impact check. It has no effect on rankings. It is still worth the two minutes, because a blank or generic icon in results and tabs makes a site look unfinished next to competitors that have one.

Why it matters

Google shows a favicon beside the site name in search results, so it is part of how your listing looks, especially on mobile. It is how people spot your tab among a dozen open ones, and how your site appears in bookmarks and on phone home screens.

None of that changes rankings. It is a recognition and polish issue, and the reason it is worth fixing is that it is so cheap to do.

Why WordPress sites are missing it

  • No Site Icon set. WordPress does not ship a default icon, so a new site has none until you upload one.
  • The icon is a file with no link tag. Some sites put favicon.ico in the root folder without any <link> tag. Browsers still check for that file by default, but this audit looks for the link tags, and declaring the icon explicitly is more reliable.
  • A theme or custom template skips wp_head(), which is where WordPress prints the icon tags.
  • A theme option overrides it and has been left empty.

How to add a favicon in WordPress

  1. Prepare the image. A square PNG of at least 512 by 512 pixels. Keep it simple: a letter, a mark or a simplified logo that stays legible at 16 pixels. Google asks for a square icon that is a multiple of 48 pixels, which WordPress's generated sizes cover.
  2. Upload it as the Site Icon. Depending on your WordPress version and theme, the Site Icon setting is under Appearance → Customize → Site Identity or under Settings → General. In block themes, the Site Logo block also has an option to use the logo as the site icon.
  3. Let WordPress print the tags. Once set, WordPress outputs rel="icon" tags in several sizes and an apple-touch-icon through wp_head(). You do not need a plugin.
  4. If your theme prints its own icon tags, remove its setting or the Site Icon, so pages do not get two conflicting sets.
  5. Check any custom templates that print their own head, and make sure they call wp_head().

When you can ignore this warning

If you deliberately serve only /favicon.ico from your site root and it shows correctly in browsers and Google, the practical impact is nil. Adding the Site Icon is still the more robust option, since it covers high-resolution screens and phone home screens too.

How to check the fix

View source and search for rel="icon". Open the linked image URL to confirm it loads. Reload the site in a new tab to see the icon; browsers cache favicons hard, so a private window helps. Google updates the favicon in results after it recrawls your homepage, which can take a while. Rerun the free SEO audit to confirm the tag is found.
