Missing social share image: making sure every shared link has a picture
A missing social share image means the page has no og:image or twitter:image tag, so when someone shares the link on Facebook, LinkedIn, X, Slack or WhatsApp, the preview has no image or one the platform picked at random. Fix it by giving important posts a featured image and setting a site-wide default share image for everything else, ideally 1200 by 630 pixels.
This is an optimization with no effect on Google rankings. It does affect how often shared links get clicked, because a card with a strong image takes up more of the feed than a bare line of text.
What it looks like in the HTML
Before
<meta property="og:title" content="Cold Brew at Home">
<meta property="og:image" content="/card.jpg">
<!-- relative URL: many platforms cannot fetch it -->
After
<meta property="og:image" content="https://example.com/wp-content/uploads/cold-brew-card.jpg">
<meta property="og:image:width" content="1200">
<meta property="og:image:height" content="630">
<meta name="twitter:image" content="https://example.com/wp-content/uploads/cold-brew-card.jpg">
Why it matters
When a link is shared, the platform fetches the page and reads its Open Graph tags. The image is the biggest part of the resulting card. With none, platforms either show a text-only link or pick an image from the page themselves, often a logo, an ad, a tiny icon or an author avatar.
The audit also warns if og:image looks incomplete, specifically when its value is shorter than 20 characters, which usually means a relative path like /card.jpg. Open Graph expects an absolute URL, including https:// and the domain, and many platforms will not resolve a relative one.
Why WordPress pages are missing it
- No featured image. Most SEO plugins use the featured image as the share image. Posts and pages without one have nothing to use.
- No default image set. Without a site-wide fallback, pages with no featured image get no
og:imageat all. - Open Graph output is off, or a theme prints OG tags without an image.
- The image is set in a page builder as a background or hero, not as the featured image, so the SEO plugin never sees it.
How to fix it in WordPress
- Set a default share image. In Hydrogen SEO, go to Hydrogen SEO → Social and choose a default share image, 1200 by 630 pixels. It is used as
og:imageandtwitter:imageon any page with no social image or featured image, so no page ships without one. A clean brand card with your logo works well. - Add featured images to posts you want shared. In the editor's sidebar, set a Featured image. Hydrogen SEO uses it as the share image when the post has no social image of its own.
- Set a custom share image where it matters. The SEO Settings sheet (Ctrl+E or Cmd+E) has an OG image field for a card made specifically for social. In the current plugin version, the Media Library can be hard to click while the sheet is open, so choosing an image there may not work; the featured image is used until that is fixed.
- Make sure Open Graph and X card tags are on, on the same Social screen.
- Design for the crop. Keep text large and centered, away from the edges, since platforms crop differently.
Other SEO plugins have equivalent default image settings; if yours has none, the featured image is the thing to fill.
How to check the fix
View source and search for og:image: it should be a full https:// URL that opens the image when pasted in a browser. Test the URL in Facebook's Sharing Debugger or LinkedIn's Post Inspector, which show the card and refresh their cached copy. For X, paste the link into a new post and look at the preview before publishing. The free SEO audit confirms the image tag is present.
Common questions
What is the best size for a social share image?
1200 by 630 pixels, a 1.91:1 ratio, works for large cards on Facebook, LinkedIn and X. Keep key content centered.
Does og:image need to be an absolute URL?
Yes. The Open Graph protocol expects a full URL including https:// and the domain. Relative paths often fail on social platforms.
Why does my old image still show after I changed it?
Platforms cache share cards. Refresh them with Facebook's Sharing Debugger or LinkedIn's Post Inspector; X updates on its own schedule.
