Rank Math's media test: what counts as an image or video
One image or video is enough to pass Rank Math's Use of Media in Your Posts test: "Your content contains images and/or video(s)." With none, it fails with "You are not using rich media like images or videos." Points rise with the count, and the featured image counts as one of the images.
Images and videos are not a ranking requirement. They matter when they help the reader understand something, and they open extra ways to be found through image search, video results and Google Discover. Adding stock photos only to pass the test adds page weight and little else.
How images and videos are counted
Rank Math's knowledge base says one image or video is the minimum to pass and four are needed for the full score. The analyzer code shows how the points are built:
| Images | Points | Videos | Points |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | 1 | 1 | 1 |
| 2 | 2 | 2 or more | 2 |
| 3 | 4 | ||
| 4 or more | 6 |
The two are added together and capped at the test's maximum of 6. Four images reach the maximum on their own; videos contribute at most 2 points, so a post with four videos and no images does not.
What counts as an image: <img> tags in the content, each [gallery] shortcode (as one item), and the post's featured image. What counts as a video: YouTube and Vimeo embeds in iframes, video tags and [video] shortcodes that point to YouTube or Vimeo, and bare YouTube or Vimeo links in the text. Because detection looks for those addresses, a self-hosted video file may not be counted as a video.
The engagement theory, and the ranking reality
The reasoning is that visual content keeps readers interested and helps explain what text alone cannot. Rank Math's tooltip says content with images or video "feels more inviting to users" and "helps supplement your textual content." Both are fair for many topics: a screenshot saves a paragraph of directions, and a short video can show a technique that is hard to describe.
For search, images and video are opportunities rather than requirements. Descriptive images can appear in Google Images, embedded videos can surface in video results, and Google Discover favors articles with large, high-quality images; its guidelines recommend images at least 1,200 pixels wide. None of that means a text-only page is penalized. Many top results for definitions, code questions and policy topics have no images at all.
None of this changes the basic trade-off. Every image you add is a file the visitor downloads, so a test that rewards more images is only worth following when each one teaches the reader something.
Media that earns its place
Good reasons to add an image or video:
- Show a step. A screenshot of the exact settings screen, or a photo of the part being replaced.
- Show a result. The finished recipe, the chart the data produces, the before and after.
- Explain a structure. A diagram of how systems connect, which is often clearer than prose.
- Replace a long description of something visual.
Poor reasons are generic stock photos, repeated banner images and decorative pictures inserted only to reach four. They add download weight and slow the page on mobile, and each one needs alt text, or an empty alt attribute if it is purely decorative.
When you do add images, compress them, give them sensible dimensions, and let below-the-fold images load lazily. Leave the test failing on pages where text is the right medium.
Screenshots age faster than text. If you add interface screenshots to a tutorial, plan to replace them when the software changes, because an outdated screenshot misleads readers more than having none.
Images in Hydrogen SEO
Hydrogen SEO's SEO score does not reward the number of images. Its image part checks alt text: full points when every image in the content has alt text, and zero for a post with no images, a trade-off its docs call out for pages like legal notices that have no reason for images.
For posts that need a featured image for share cards and archives, Hydrogen AI can generate one on request with a connected account, and the Media Library Generate Alt Text button writes alt text for new or existing images; see AI content tools and image alt text.
Common questions
Does the featured image count toward Rank Math's media test?
Yes. The analyzer adds the featured image to the number of images found in the content.
How many images do I need for the full score?
Four images reach the maximum points in the current analyzer. Rank Math's knowledge base describes it as at least four images or videos, but videos add fewer points than images.
Do images help my page rank?
Images are not required for ranking. They can help readers, and they give you a chance to appear in image search and Google Discover.
