SEO for gyms and fitness studios on WordPress

SEO for gyms and fitness studios starts with the local pack: when someone searches "gym near me", "yoga class tonight" or "24 hour gym" plus your area, your Business Profile, reviews and distance do most of the work. Your website then has to answer three questions immediately: what it costs, when the classes are and how to try it.

Many gym sites fail on exactly those three. Prices say "call us", the timetable lives inside a booking app widget that search engines cannot read, and the free trial is buried in a pop-up.

Pages every gyms site needs

  • Class pages. One page per class type (spin, reformer Pilates, HIIT, boxing) describing the workout, level, duration and what to bring, linked to the timetable.
  • Timetable page. The weekly schedule as HTML text people and crawlers can read, with the booking widget alongside it rather than instead of it.
  • Membership and pricing page. Plans, prices, joining fees, contract length and cancellation terms. "Gym prices" plus your town is a common search.
  • Trainer profiles. Qualifications, specialisms and photos for each coach. Personal training searches often mention a goal or specialism.
  • Free trial or first visit page. What happens on day one, what to bring and how to book. It is the page your ads and Business Profile should point to.

Get the timetable out of the widget

Booking platforms often embed the schedule as an iframe or render it with JavaScript from another domain. That content belongs to the booking platform's page, not yours, so a search for "Saturday spin class" plus your town finds nothing on your site.

Keep the widget for booking, and add a plain HTML summary of the regular weekly schedule on the page: class name, day, time and studio. Update it when the timetable changes, not only in the app. For one-off events such as an open day or a charity workout, Event markup fits; the recurring weekly timetable is better left as readable text. See JavaScript SEO.

Publish your prices

Hiding membership prices is a common tactic to get a sales call, but people who cannot find a price often choose a competitor who shows one, and search engines have nothing to match "cheap gym" or "no contract gym" against. State the price, what is included, joining fees and the cancellation policy.

If prices vary by location or by promotion, show the standard rate and explain how offers work. Put the terms on the page as text, not in a PDF. Clear terms also cut negative reviews about surprise fees, which matter in the local pack.

ExerciseGym schema and locations

ExerciseGym is a schema.org subtype of SportsActivityLocation and LocalBusiness. Add openingHoursSpecification exactly as your doors open; a 24-hour gym can use 00:00 to 23:59 on every day. Staffed hours that differ from access hours are worth stating in text.

For a chain, give each club its own page with its own address, hours and classes, and add Local Business to that page's SEO Settings sheet in Hydrogen SEO so it replaces the site-wide entry there. Trainer pages can describe each coach as a Person. Keep health claims realistic: promising a specific weight loss in a set time invites distrust from readers and reviewers alike.

Common questions

Can Google read my Mindbody or booking app schedule?

Usually not as content on your site, because widgets load from the provider's domain or via script. Add a text version of the regular schedule to your page.

Should a boutique studio use ExerciseGym?

It is a reasonable fit for most fitness studios. A yoga or dance studio can also consider SportsActivityLocation or a more specific type if one matches.

Do I need a page per class?

Yes, for the classes people search for by name. A single timetable page cannot rank for reformer Pilates and boxing at the same time.
