Meta description too long: how to trim it so the point survives

A meta description is too long when it runs past 160 characters, beyond what Google usually displays before cutting it off with an ellipsis. Trim it to the sentence or two that matters, with the most useful information in the first 120 characters.

A long description is not penalized, and Google may even show different parts of it for different queries. The real risk is that the useful part sits after the cut, and that long, rambling descriptions are the kind Google tends to replace with its own snippet.

What it looks like in the HTML

Before

html
<meta name="description" content="Welcome to Bean Notes, the home of coffee lovers everywhere. In this article we will be taking a detailed look at everything you could ever want to know about making cold brew coffee at home, including ratios, grind size, steeping time and much more.">

After

html
<meta name="description" content="Cold brew needs a coarse grind, a 1:8 ratio and 12 to 18 hours in the fridge. Here is the method and how to fix bitter or weak batches.">

Why it matters

Google truncates descriptions by pixel width, typically around 150 to 160 characters on desktop and fewer on mobile. Whatever falls after that point is invisible to the searcher. If your description opens with a welcome message and gets to the point in the second sentence, the visible part is the welcome message.

Long descriptions often try to cover every angle of a page, which makes them vague. Google rewrites descriptions it considers a poor match for the query, so a focused description written for the page's main query is more likely to survive than a paragraph that lists everything.

Common WordPress causes

  • The excerpt template pulls too much. A description template of %excerpt% uses the whole manual excerpt, and some excerpts are full paragraphs written for archive pages.
  • Content pasted into the description field. Copying the first paragraph of a post into the description is quick, but first paragraphs are rarely written to fit 160 characters.
  • Plugin-generated descriptions. Some tools build descriptions from the opening of the content without trimming at a sentence boundary.

How to fix it in WordPress

  1. Cut the preamble. Delete openers like "In this article" or "Welcome to". Start with the answer, the benefit or the key fact.
  2. Keep one idea plus one supporting detail. A description is a pitch, not a summary. If you need three sentences, you probably need to choose.
  3. Edit in Hydrogen SEO. Open the post, press Ctrl+E or Cmd+E for the SEO Settings sheet, and edit the Meta description. The live SERP preview shows where Google would truncate, which is more accurate than a character count because it accounts for letter width.
  4. Fix the template if many pages are affected. Under Hydrogen SEO → Titles & Meta, check what the post type's description template uses. If excerpts are long, consider writing shorter excerpts, or write descriptions directly for the pages that matter.
  5. Find every long one. The Hydrogen SEO site audit lists descriptions that are too long across the site. With a connected account, you can ask the Hydrogen AI agent to tighten them and review each change.

When you can ignore this warning

A description of 165 characters where the last few words are a harmless tail is not worth fixing ahead of real problems. The warning matters when the cut hides something important: a price, the answer to the query, or the reason to click. Read the first 150 characters on their own. If they stand up, the page is fine.

How to check the fix

View the page source and check the name="description" tag, or run the URL through the free SEO audit, which reports the length. After Google recrawls the page, search for your target query and see which snippet it shows. If Google still rewrites it, check that the description actually matches what the page says; a mismatch is a common reason.

Common questions

How long can a meta description be?

There is no hard limit, but Google usually displays about 150 to 160 characters on desktop. Anything beyond that is typically cut off.

Does Google penalize long meta descriptions?

No. There is no penalty. The only cost is that searchers do not see the truncated part, and long descriptions are more often replaced by Google's own snippet.

Is mobile truncation different?

Yes, mobile results often show fewer characters than desktop. Putting the key information in the first 120 characters covers both.
