Title tag too long: how to shorten it without losing the point

A title tag is too long when it runs past about 60 characters, the point where Google usually cuts it off with an ellipsis on desktop. The fix is to put the important words first and trim what is left: filler phrases, repeated keywords and long brand suffixes.

Truncation is not a penalty. Google still reads the whole title, and a long title can rank. The cost is that searchers see a clipped headline, and if the words that matter sit at the end, they never see them. Long titles are also more likely to be rewritten by Google.

Why it matters

Google measures title width in pixels, roughly 600 pixels on desktop, so the cut-off point varies: a title full of wide letters like W and M truncates sooner than one full of i and l. Sixty characters is the point where most titles are still intact, which is why Hydrogen SEO uses it as the threshold.

When a title is truncated, searchers see the first part and an ellipsis. If your title front-loads the topic, that costs little. If it opens with "The Complete, Ultimate Guide to" and the topic comes last, the visible part says nothing. Very long titles, especially ones stuffed with keyword variations, are also a common reason Google replaces a title with its own version.

Common WordPress causes

  • Long post titles plus a template suffix. A 55-character post headline becomes 75 characters once the template adds | and a long site name.
  • A long site name or tagline in every title. A site name like "Smith & Daughters Family Plumbing and Heating Services" eats most of the space on every page.
  • Keyword stacking. Titles written as lists of variations: "Plumber London, Emergency Plumber London, 24 Hour Plumber".
  • Duplicated words from the template. A template of %title% %separator% %category% %separator% %site_name% repeats words the post title already contains.

How to fix it in WordPress

  1. Lead with the topic. Move the main subject to the front. Cut words that add no meaning: "complete", "ultimate", "everything you need to know".
  2. Keep one version of the keyword. Say it once, naturally. Repeating variations reads as spam to people and to Google.
  3. Shorten or drop the suffix. In Hydrogen SEO, go to Hydrogen SEO → Titles & Meta and look at the template for the affected post type. If the site name is long, consider a shorter brand form in the template, or drop %site_name% for post types where titles run long anyway.
  4. Override individual titles. Open the post, press Ctrl+E or Cmd+E to open the SEO Settings sheet, and write a tighter SEO title. The live SERP preview shows where Google would truncate, which is more reliable than counting characters. The post's visible headline can stay long; the SEO title is separate.
  5. Find them all at once. The Hydrogen SEO site audit flags titles that are too long across the site, so you can fix the worst offenders first.

Other SEO plugins have the same two layers, a template and a per-post field. The approach is identical.

When you can ignore this warning

A title of 62 or 65 characters with the important words up front is fine; the part that gets cut is only the brand suffix. You can also accept long titles on pages that rank for long, specific queries, where the extra words match what people type. What you should not accept is a title where the truncation hides the topic.

How to check the fix

Check the <title> in the page source or run the page through the free SEO audit, which reports the length. For a visual check, use the SERP preview in the SEO Settings sheet as you edit. After Google recrawls the page, search for it and look at the title link it shows. If Google still rewrites it, compare your title with the page's H1: a big mismatch between the two is a common trigger.

Common questions

What is the maximum title tag length for Google?

There is no hard limit in characters. Google truncates by pixel width, around 600 pixels on desktop, which usually lands between 50 and 60 characters.

Does Google ignore words after the cut-off?

Google still reads the full title when it processes the page. Truncation only affects what searchers see in results.

Should the SEO title match the post title?

They should describe the same thing, but they do not have to be identical. A long, descriptive headline on the page can pair with a shorter SEO title written for results.
