Meta description too short: when to expand it and what to add
A meta description is flagged as short when it has fewer than 120 characters. Google usually shows around 150 to 160 characters on desktop, so a short description leaves part of your snippet unused, space you could fill with a detail that makes someone click.
This is an optimization, the lowest severity in the audit. A tight 100-character description that answers the query is better than a padded one. Treat the flag as a prompt to check whether the description says enough, not as a target to hit.
What it looks like in the HTML
Before
<meta name="description" content="Read our guide to cold brew coffee.">
After
<meta name="description" content="Cold brew needs a coarse grind, a 1:8 ratio and 12 to 18 hours in the fridge. Here is the method, the math and how to fix bitter or weak batches.">
Why it matters
The description is your pitch in the results. A short, generic one like "Read our guide to cold brew coffee" tells the searcher nothing they did not already know from the title. The results around yours will often have longer snippets with specifics, and specifics win attention.
Short descriptions are also more likely to be replaced. When a description is too thin to match a query, Google often pulls text from the page instead. A fuller description that covers the main question and a supporting detail gives Google less reason to rewrite it. Meta descriptions do not affect rankings directly, so the payoff here is click-through, not position.
Common WordPress causes
- Template variables that resolve to little. A template of
%excerpt%produces a short description when excerpts are one line. A%term_description%template gives a two-word category description a two-word meta description. - Descriptions written as labels. "Our services." "Contact us today." Written quickly during a build and never revisited.
- Auto-generated excerpts cut short. Some themes and plugins trim excerpts to a fixed word count well under the space Google offers.
How to fix it in WordPress
- Add the specific detail. Answer the query in the first clause, then add the thing that makes your page worth choosing: a number, a method, what the reader will be able to do. Aim for about 140 to 160 characters, with the key information in the first 120 in case of truncation.
- Edit it in Hydrogen SEO. Open the post, press Ctrl+E or Cmd+E for the SEO Settings sheet, and rewrite the Meta description. The character count and live SERP preview update as you type.
- Fix weak templates. If a whole post type or taxonomy produces short descriptions, look at its template under Hydrogen SEO → Titles & Meta. For taxonomies, the better fix is often writing real category descriptions in Posts → Categories, which also gives the archive page some useful text.
- Work through them in bulk. The Hydrogen SEO site audit flags descriptions that are too short or too long across the site. With a connected account, the Hydrogen AI agent can draft replacements that you review before they are saved.
Other SEO plugins work the same way: a template for defaults, a per-post field for exceptions.
When you can ignore this warning
Leave a short description alone when it already says everything a searcher needs and there is nothing honest to add. A store locator page, a login page, or a page you have set to noindex does not need 150 characters. Padding a description with filler ("Learn more about our amazing services today!") makes it worse, not better.
For examples of strong and weak descriptions, see meta descriptions that earn clicks.
How to check the fix
View the page source and read the content of the name="description" tag, or run the URL through the free SEO audit to see its length. In Google, the new snippet appears after a recrawl, and for some queries Google may still show page text instead. Search Console's performance report can show whether click-through rate changes for the page over the following weeks.
Common questions
What is the ideal meta description length?
Around 120 to 160 characters fits most desktop results. Google truncates by pixel width, so put the important part first rather than aiming for an exact count.
Is a short meta description better than none?
Usually, yes, as long as it is accurate. A specific short description gives Google something to use; none at all leaves the snippet entirely to Google.
Will expanding my meta description improve rankings?
No. Meta descriptions are not a ranking factor. A better description can improve how many searchers click, which is still worth having.
