Title tag too short: when it matters and how to write a better one
A title tag is too short when it has fewer than 30 characters, which usually means it names the page without saying anything useful about it. "Services" or "Blog | Acme" tells a searcher almost nothing, and it leaves room in the results that a competitor's title will fill with a reason to click.
This is a warning, not an emergency. Short titles do not break anything, and some pages, like a well-known brand's homepage, can carry a short one. But on most content pages a longer, more specific title helps Google understand the page and helps people choose it.

Why it matters
Google shows roughly 50 to 60 characters of a title on desktop before truncating, measured in pixels rather than characters. A 12-character title uses a fifth of that space. The rest is space where you could have named the topic, the benefit, or the specific thing the page covers.
Short titles are also more likely to be rewritten. When a title is too generic to describe the page, Google may build its own from the H1 or other text, and you lose control of the headline. A specific title that matches the page's main heading is the best way to keep the one you wrote.
Short titles tend to repeat across a site, too. If twenty service pages are all titled with just the service name and the brand, they look interchangeable in results.
Common WordPress causes
- The post title is used as-is. Many themes print just the post title, and post titles are written for the page, not for search. "About" and "Contact" are fine as page names but thin as search titles.
- The template drops the site name. A title template of
%title%alone produces short titles for any short post name. - Archive and taxonomy pages. Category and tag archives often get titles like "News" or "Tag: tips" from the theme.
- Hand-typed placeholders. A title written during a site build ("Home", "Test page") that nobody came back to.
How to fix it in WordPress
- Rewrite the title for the searcher. Say what the page is and why it is worth the click. Add the topic, a qualifier, or a concrete detail: "Contact" becomes "Contact Acme Support: Phone, Email and Live Chat". Aim for about 50 to 60 characters, but a clear 40-character title beats a padded 60-character one.
- In Hydrogen SEO, override the title per page. Open the page in the editor, press Ctrl+E or Cmd+E to open the SEO Settings sheet, and type into SEO title. The character count and live SERP preview show how it will display.
- Fix the pattern with templates. Under Hydrogen SEO → Titles & Meta, set the post type's title template to include context, for example
%title% %separator% %site_name%. For categories,%term_title% %separator% %site_name%is the shipped default. Templates fix every page of that type at once; hand-written titles cover the pages that earn traffic. - Use the site audit for the full list. The Hydrogen SEO site audit flags metadata that is too short or too long across the site, so you can work through titles in one pass instead of finding them one page at a time.
- Draft options with AI if you want them. With a connected hydrogenseo.com account, the Hydrogen AI tab in the SEO Settings sheet can suggest titles for you to edit.
If you use another SEO plugin, its title template settings work the same way. Pick one plugin to own titles.
When you can ignore this warning
A short title can be the right call when the page is a known destination and the name is what people search for: your brand's homepage, a product name people type directly, or a login page. It is also fine on pages you do not want ranking at all, such as a thank-you page set to noindex.
For everything else, treat 30 characters as a prompt to check whether the title says enough. The guide on writing SEO titles that rank covers structure and examples.
How to check the fix
View the page source and read the <title> element, or run the page through the free SEO audit, which reports the title and its length. Remember that Google only picks up the change after it recrawls the page, which can take days. Changes to templates show up on every affected page as soon as caches are cleared.
Common questions
What is the minimum length for a title tag?
There is no official minimum. Hydrogen SEO flags titles under 30 characters because they rarely describe a page well, but a short title that is clear and specific is not an error.
Should I add my brand name to lengthen a title?
Adding the site name after a separator is a reasonable default and helps recognition. It should not replace describing the page, and on long titles it is the first thing to trim.
Does a longer title rank better?
Not by itself. Length is not a ranking factor. A longer title helps only when the extra words describe the page more precisely or give searchers a reason to click.
