Missing X (Twitter) card tags: getting large image cards on X

Why it matters

On X, a link with a summary_large_image card shows a full-width image above the title, while a plain summary card shows a small thumbnail beside it, and a link with no usable tags may show no card at all. In a fast-moving feed, the large image is what stops the scroll.

X's crawler reads Open Graph tags as a fallback for title, description and image, so a page with good OG tags is most of the way there. The twitter:card tag is the missing piece that states which layout to use. The optional twitter:site tag attributes the card to your account.

Why WordPress pages are missing them

• WordPress core prints no card tags, and neither do most themes.
• Only Open Graph is enabled. Some setups print OG tags but have X card output turned off, often after a plugin conflict.
• A theme's social feature prints OG only. Themes with built-in social meta sometimes skip the twitter: tags entirely.

How to fix it in WordPress

1. Turn on X card output. In Hydrogen SEO, go to Hydrogen SEO → Social and make sure X (Twitter) card tags is on. Hydrogen SEO prints summary_large_image cards with twitter:card, twitter:title, twitter:description and image tags on every page.
2. Add your X username. On the same screen, enter your X username; it is printed as twitter:site. If you leave it empty and your social profiles include an x.com profile URL, that account is used instead.
3. Set a default share image there as well, so pages without a featured image still get a card image. 1200 by 630 pixels works for X's large card.
4. Rely on the fallback chain. X fields you leave empty fall back to the Open Graph values, then to the SEO title and meta description. Only fill in the X title and description in the SEO Settings sheet (Ctrl+E or Cmd+E) when a post deserves X-specific copy.
5. Remove duplicates. If another plugin or your theme also prints twitter: tags, keep one source.

In other SEO plugins, look for a "Twitter" or "X" section in the social settings; the principle is the same.

When you can ignore this warning

If nobody shares your pages on X, this tag changes nothing you will notice. It is also low priority on pages that are not meant to be shared at all, such as account and checkout pages. Since the fix is usually a single switch in your SEO plugin, most sites turn it on and move on.

How to check the fix

View source and search for twitter:card; it should read summary_large_image. X no longer offers a public card preview tool, so the practical test is to paste the URL into a new post and look at the preview before you publish. X caches cards for URLs shared before, so changes can take time to appear. The free SEO audit confirms whether the tag is present.
