llms.txt generator
Fill in a name, a short summary and the pages that matter, and copy a file that follows the llms.txt proposal: an H1 title, a blockquote summary, optional notes, then H2 sections of Markdown links. A section named Optional marks links a tool can skip when it is short on context.
- Save it as /llms.txt at your site root. It is a proposal with limited adoption: no major AI company has said it uses the file for ranking or citations.

Think of it as a curated table of contents for a reader with a small attention budget.
- The summary carries the most weight. State what the site is, who it serves and anything a model gets wrong about you, in two or three sentences.
- Key pages should be the ones that answer real questions: pricing, documentation, product pages, policies. Not every blog post.
- Notes after each link tell the reader what it will find there, which saves it a fetch.
Keep it short. A file that lists every URL on the site is just a worse sitemap.
What it will and will not do
llms.txt is a community proposal from 2024, not a standard. Some developer tools and documentation sites read it, but no major AI company has said it uses the file to decide what to cite, and it is not a ranking signal for any search engine. Publish one if you want a clean, machine-readable summary to exist; do not expect traffic from it. The longer version is in our llms.txt write-up.
Publishing it
Save the output as llms.txt in your site root so it loads at https://yoursite.com/llms.txt as plain text. On WordPress, an SEO plugin with an llms.txt editor can serve it without FTP; otherwise upload the file. Keep it out of your XML sitemap, since it is a file for tools, not a page for searchers.
Common questions
Is llms.txt the same as robots.txt for AI?
No. robots.txt controls whether crawlers may fetch pages. llms.txt only describes your site; it grants or blocks nothing.
Should I also publish llms-full.txt?
Some documentation sites publish a second file with their full text for coding assistants. For a typical business site the short file is enough.
Can llms.txt hurt SEO?
No. Search engines treat it like any other text file. Just make sure it is accurate, since anything that reads it will repeat what it says.
