How to optimize your WordPress content for Google AI Overviews

To optimize for AI Overviews, do the same things that earn good Google results, then make each answer easy to lift out of your page: put a direct answer at the top, use headings that match real questions, keep the page indexed and eligible for a snippet, and add accurate schema. Google says there is no special markup or file required to appear in AI Overviews.

The pages cited in an Overview come from Google's index. If a page is not indexed, or it carries nosnippet, it cannot be used. So the first half of this guide is plain indexing hygiene, and the second half is about writing passages a machine can quote without guessing.

Step by step

1. Confirm your key pages are indexed and snippet-eligible

Run each target URL through the URL Inspection tool in Search Console. You want URL is on Google. Then check the page source for anything that stops Google showing text from it:

  • noindex in the robots meta tag or an X-Robots-Tag header
  • nosnippet or a very low max-snippet value
  • data-nosnippet wrapped around the part that answers the question

If a page is not indexed, fix that first: check if a page is indexed explains how to read the result.

2. See which queries already trigger an Overview

Search your target queries in a private window and note which ones show an AI Overview and which sites are cited. Search Console does not split AI Overview traffic out: clicks and impressions from AI features are counted in the normal Performance report under Web. So your best signal is a query list you check by hand every month, alongside Performance data for those queries.

3. Put the answer in the first paragraph

For each page, write two to four sentences at the very top that answer the query completely and make sense quoted on their own. Then expand. Compare:

  • Weak: "Choosing the right tent is a big decision, and there are lots of factors to consider."
  • Quotable: "For summer backpacking, a two-person tent under 1.5 kg with a full-mesh inner is the usual choice. Heavier tents with solid inners suit shoulder seasons."

The second can be lifted as-is. The first says nothing a model can use.

4. Turn vague headings into questions

Rewrite H2s and H3s to match how people ask, then answer each one fully in the section below it. "How long does a boiler service take?" beats "Timing". Each heading plus its first paragraph should work as a standalone answer. Keep one topic per section so nothing depends on text elsewhere on the page.

5. Use lists and tables where the answer is a list or a table

Steps belong in an ordered list, comparisons in a table, specifications in a definition-style list. Real HTML lists and tables are easier to extract than the same content written as a paragraph or pasted as an image. In the block editor, use the List and Table blocks rather than line breaks.

6. Add accurate schema

Schema does not buy a place in an Overview, but it removes ambiguity about what the page is and who wrote it. In Hydrogen SEO, open the post, press ⌘E / Ctrl+E for the SEO Settings sheet and set the schema type: Article for posts, HowTo for step-by-step guides, FAQ where the page genuinely answers several questions, Product or Local Business where they fit. Validate the output with the JSON-LD validator. The schema markup overview lists every type.

7. Show who wrote it and when you checked it

Add a real author with a short bio, keep an about page that names the people behind the site, and update pages when facts change. Change the date only when the content changes. For fast-moving topics, a line such as "Prices checked September 2026" tells readers and machines how fresh the facts are.

What does not help

  • Special AI tags or files. Google has said none are needed. llms.txt is not used by Google Search; see adding llms.txt to WordPress for what it is.
  • Blocking Google-Extended to "protect" content. It does not affect AI Overviews either way. Blocking AI crawlers explains the difference.
  • Mass-produced pages. Thin pages written only to catch question variants tend to hurt the whole site. Pruning thin content is often the better use of the time.
  • Date bumps with no real change. They are easy to spot and do nothing for trust.

Check it worked

Give it a few weeks after Google recrawls the updated pages. Re-run your query list and record which pages are cited. Results vary from one search to the next, so look for a trend across several checks rather than a single win. Hydrogen SEO is building an AEO analysis tool to track this; it is coming soon and not yet available.

Common questions

Can I opt out of AI Overviews but stay in Google Search?

Not separately. The controls are the snippet directives, nosnippet and max-snippet, which also limit your regular snippets.

Do I need FAQ schema to appear in AI Overviews?

No. Schema helps machines understand the page, but Google says no special markup is required. Add FAQ schema only where the page really is a set of questions and answers.

Do AI Overviews only cite the top-ranking pages?

They draw on Google's index and often cite pages that also rank well, but not only the top result. Being indexed and giving a clear answer are the basics.
