The SEO Framework alternatives: six plugins measured on the same site

Any alternative to The SEO Framework will cost more, because it was the lightest plugin we measured (+8.0 ms, 0 queries). The best alternative depends on what you are missing. Slim SEO is almost as light and adds archives and images to the sitemap. Hydrogen SEO adds AI features and a dashboard for a modest increase. The heavier plugins add configuration and ecosystem.

Figures come from our seven-plugin benchmark, free versions at defaults, one plugin at a time on WordPress 7.1. We build Hydrogen SEO, one of the options below.

Why people look for an alternative

The SEO Framework won or shared seven of sixteen categories in our benchmark, so leaving it is rarely about performance. The reasons people give that the data supports:

  • A minimal sitemap. A flat file with 51 URLs, posts and pages only. No index, no taxonomy or author archives, and no image entries at defaults.
  • Few knobs. Its automation-first design means fewer settings if you want manual control over every output.
  • No AI. It has no AI features by design. If you want generated titles, descriptions or alt text, you need another tool.
  • Less hand-holding. Beginners who want a setup wizard and guidance get less of it here.

Reasons to stay: it added the lowest PHP time, zero queries and only 8 hooks; its editor loads just 77.6 KB; it creates no tables; and it restored the exact baseline on deactivation. It still prints a description, a canonical, 10 Open Graph and 5 X tags, and 9 schema types. If your site does not need archives or images in the sitemap and you do not want AI, there is no measured reason to leave.

  1. Slim SEO

    +10 ms front-end, +2 queries, 0 custom tables, 10 JSON-LD types

The closest in cost (+10.0 ms, 2 queries, same +2.0 MB memory, no tables) with a fuller sitemap: 73 URLs including archives and all 40 featured images. It has the smallest package and head growth in the field. It gives up lastmod on 23 URLs and prints 2 X tags against 5, and it has even fewer settings. See The SEO Framework vs Slim SEO.

  2. Hydrogen SEO

    +12.9 ms front-end, +1 queries, 0 custom tables, 10 JSON-LD types

Our plugin. For +12.9 ms, 1 query and still no tables, it adds a 72-URL sitemap with images and full lastmod, 10 schema types, a dashboard with audits and a health score, and AI features including an agent, which need a free account. Its editor bundle is 700.4 KB, about nine times The SEO Framework's, and it is Beta. See Hydrogen SEO vs The SEO Framework.

  3. SEOPress

    +24.5 ms front-end, +1 queries, 1 custom tables, 0 JSON-LD types

More settings and a sitemap with archives and images, with a restrained admin and a light 217 KB editor. It costs three times the PHP time (+24.5 ms) and its free version printed no schema, so you would lose the 9 types The SEO Framework prints. See SEOPress vs The SEO Framework.

  4. Yoast SEO

    +39 ms front-end, +3 queries, 6 custom tables, 12 JSON-LD types

The most complete output we measured: 12 schema types and a 75-URL sitemap with images. It costs about five times as much on the server (+39.0 ms, six tables, 187 hooks) and loads 4,160 KB into the editor. Choose it for its content analysis and ecosystem. See Yoast vs The SEO Framework.

  5. Rank Math

    +36.1 ms front-end, +16 queries, 6 custom tables, 6 JSON-LD types

Maximum configuration and the fullest social tags (11 Open Graph, 8 X), with AI features. It added 16 queries, six tables and 155 hooks, and its sitemap still leaves out images and some archives at defaults. See Rank Math vs The SEO Framework.

  6. All in One SEO

    +53.5 ms front-end, +22 queries, 9 custom tables, 8 JSON-LD types

A guided setup and a full interface, and a sitemap with archives. It is the heaviest plugin we measured (+53.5 ms, 22 queries, nine tables, 511 KB dashboard) and printed fewer schema types and social tags than The SEO Framework. See All in One SEO vs The SEO Framework.
