What is AI Mode?
AI Mode is a conversational search mode in Google Search. Instead of a page of ranked links, it gives an AI-written answer to your question, with links to the web pages it drew on, and lets you ask follow-up questions in the same thread. It is built on a custom version of Google's Gemini models and opens as its own view, separate from the regular results page.
Google launched AI Mode in the US in 2025 after testing it in Search Labs, and has since expanded it to more countries and languages. It sits alongside AI Overviews, which are summaries shown on top of regular results. AI Mode is the full-page, back-and-forth version.
How it differs from AI Overviews
| AI Overviews | AI Mode | |
|---|---|---|
| Where it appears | Top of some regular results pages | A separate mode the user opens |
| When it appears | Google decides per query | Whenever the user chooses it |
| Follow-up questions | Not in the overview itself | Yes, as a conversation |
| Typical queries | Informational questions | Longer, multi-part, comparative questions |
Both use query fan-out: Google breaks the question into subtopics and runs many related searches at once, then assembles an answer from the pages it finds. That is why AI Mode can cite pages that do not rank for the exact words the user typed.
What it means for your site
AI Mode answers draw on Google's index, so the basics still decide eligibility. Google's guidance for its AI features is that a page must be indexed and eligible to show a snippet, and that no special markup or file is required. The same controls apply as for regular snippets: nosnippet, data-nosnippet, and max-snippet limit what can be shown.
What changes is how people search. AI Mode encourages long, specific questions ("which pour-over dripper is easiest for a beginner who drinks one cup a day"), and the answer may combine several sources. Pages that cover a topic thoroughly, answer sub-questions directly, and show first-hand experience give Google more to work with. See generative engine optimization.
Measuring AI Mode traffic
Google has said clicks and impressions from AI Mode are counted in Search Console's Performance report as part of web search, not broken out separately. You cannot filter for AI Mode alone there. Clicks that reach your site look like regular Google organic visits in analytics.
A practical check: search your key topics in AI Mode yourself and note which sources it cites. The AI Overviews guide covers content changes that apply to both features.
In WordPress
Nothing in WordPress targets AI Mode directly, and no plugin can place you in it. What helps is clean, server-rendered HTML, accurate structured data, clear headings, and no accidental nosnippet or noindex. Hydrogen SEO covers the technical side and offers an llms.txt editor; its AI-citation analysis is coming soon and not yet available.
Common questions
Can I opt out of AI Mode?
The controls are the same as for snippets. nosnippet or max-snippet limit what Google can show, but they also affect your regular search snippets. The Google-Extended token controls Gemini training use, not appearance in Search features.
Does AI Mode use the same ranking as regular search?
It uses Google's index and ranking systems to find pages, but it runs many related searches per question, so cited sources can differ from the top results for the typed query.
Is AI Mode the same as Gemini?
No. Gemini is Google's AI assistant app and model family. AI Mode is a Search feature built on a version of Gemini that grounds its answers in Google Search results.
