Yoast SEO title width: the 600 pixel rule and what it misses

Pixels, not characters, are what Yoast SEO's SEO title width check measures. It reads your SEO title as it appears in the snippet preview, and goes red once it is wider than 600 pixels. Anything from 1 to 600 pixels is green, and an empty title is red with the message "Please create an SEO title."

The 600 pixel figure approximates how much title Google shows on desktop before it cuts the line with an ellipsis. Going over is not a ranking penalty. It only means searchers may not see the end of your title, so the question is whether the words that matter come first.

Pixels instead of characters

Characters are an unreliable ruler because letters differ in width. A title with many capitals and wide letters such as W and M fills 600 pixels far sooner than one full of i, l and t. Yoast measures the rendered width in the snippet preview so it can tell the difference, which is more accurate than any character count.

Two details about what gets measured:

  • Variables are resolved. If your title uses template variables such as the post title or category, the check measures the text they produce, not the variable names.
  • The separator and site title are excluded. Yoast leaves the separator and site title variables out of the calculation. A title that passes can still run longer in the real <title> tag once your site name is appended, so glance at the full preview as well as the traffic light.

There is no orange state in the current version of the check. It is either within the width or over it.

Where 600 pixels comes from

Google does not publish a title length limit. It truncates titles to fit the space available on the device, and that space has changed over the years as Google adjusted fonts and result layouts. SEO tools settled on roughly 600 pixels as the desktop figure because it matches what people observe in results, which is why you will see 50 to 60 characters quoted as the typical fit.

Mobile results are a different width and wrap titles onto more lines, so a title that fits on desktop can look different on a phone. Any preview, Yoast's included, is an approximation of a layout Google controls.

When a wide title is fine

The title tag remains one of the clearest signals of what a page is about, and Google reads the whole thing, visible or not. Width affects presentation and clicks, not whether Google understands the page.

So a title over 600 pixels is acceptable when:

  • the important words are at the front and the cut falls on a detail, such as a brand name or a trailing qualifier;
  • the page is a product or reference page where a precise, longer name is exactly what searchers type;
  • you have tested a shorter title and it lost clarity.

It is worth fixing when the key promise sits at the end, when the title opens with filler like "The complete and ultimate guide to", or when it strings together keyword variations. Very long and repetitive titles are also more likely to be replaced by Google with its own wording pulled from your headings or content.

Trimming a title without losing it

Work from the front:

  1. Put the topic and the payoff in the first 40 or so characters.
  2. Cut words that add length but no meaning: "complete", "ultimate", "everything you need to know".
  3. Say the keyword once. Repeating it in different forms uses width and reads as spam.
  4. Shorten the site name part if it is long. A short brand at the end is plenty.

For example, "The Complete Beginner's Guide to Brewing Cold Brew Coffee at Home" becomes "Cold Brew at Home: A Beginner's Guide". The meaning survives and the whole line is visible. You can test variations in the free SERP snippet preview.

Title length in Hydrogen SEO

Hydrogen SEO shows a character count on the SEO title field and a live Google SERP preview with desktop and mobile views, updating as you type. Its guidance is 50 to 60 characters, with the caveat that pixels are what count, so trust the preview when the two disagree.

Across the whole site, the site audit flags titles that are too long or too short. With a connected account you can also ask Hydrogen AI to "find posts whose SEO titles are longer than 60 characters and shorten them without losing the main keyword", one of the ready-made agent recipes.

Common questions

Why does Yoast say my title is fine when Google cuts it off?

The check leaves the separator and site title variables out of its measurement, and Google's own layout varies by device and changes over time. Check the full snippet preview and your live results.

Is there a minimum title width in Yoast?

The current check only turns red for an empty title or one wider than 600 pixels. Any width between 1 and 600 pixels is green.

Does a truncated title hurt rankings?

No. Google still reads the full title tag. Truncation can reduce clicks if the important words are hidden, which is why front-loading matters more than hitting an exact width.
