The best WordPress SEO plugin for beginners: safe defaults, ranked
For a beginner, Slim SEO is our pick: on a fresh install it printed a meta description, a canonical, a 10-type schema graph and a 73-URL sitemap with images, with nothing to configure and zero admin menus added. Hydrogen SEO (ours) is second: equally complete defaults, plus an optional setup wizard, an SEO score and a Google snippet preview in the editor, but it is Beta software.
This ranking is a judgment, not a single benchmark number. It rests on the measured default output in our seven-plugin benchmark and on how much each plugin asks of you before it works correctly. We build Hydrogen SEO.
How we ranked them
A beginner is the person most likely to run a plugin at its defaults and never check the page source, so we weighted what a fresh install gets right without help:
- Default traps: does the free version print a description, a canonical and schema, and does it print anything at all before setup is finished?
- Setup surface: admin menus added (every plugin added 2 except Slim SEO, which added 0) and whether a setup step is required before output appears.
- Guidance: in-editor help such as a score or a snippet preview, where our sources document it.
We did not run usability tests. Interface quality and documentation are real reasons to choose a plugin that no table captures, and a beginner who wants a lot of hand-holding may order these differently.
Slim SEO

The fewest ways to get it wrong. On a fresh install it printed a description, a canonical, 11 Open Graph tags, 10 schema types and a sitemap with images, and it adds no admin menus to learn. The flip side is almost no configuration: when you do want to change something, there is little to change. Its only notable default gap is

All in One SEO

The most approachable of the big plugins in our sources: guided setup, clear screens and sensible defaults, including a meta description. At defaults it printed 8 schema types and a 73-URL sitemap without images. The cost is weight: +53.5 ms, a 511 KB dashboard and 130 files in the editor. The SEO Framework

Correct defaults (description, canonical, 9 schema types) and nothing to finish before it works, at the lowest server cost in the field. It sits here rather than higher because it gives the least beginner hand-holding of the seven, by design, which suits beginners who would rather be left alone than guided.
Yoast SEO
+39 ms front-end, +3 queries, 6 custom tables, 12 JSON-LD types
The best-documented plugin here, with the traffic-light content analysis many people learn SEO on. But its defaults hold a beginner trap: with no description written and no template set, it prints no meta description at all. Set a description template on day one and it becomes a solid choice. Its editor is the heaviest we measured at 4,160 KB.

A setup wizard, many modules and a generous free tier. The trap is the most serious in the test: it prints nothing on the front end, no titles, meta or schema, until you finish or skip that wizard. SEOPress

A restrained interface and a light editor (217 KB), but its free version printed no schema at defaults, a gap a beginner is unlikely to spot because nothing on screen says it is missing. Pair it with a schema tool, or pick a plugin that prints schema out of the box.
Three checks to run after installing any SEO plugin
Whichever plugin you choose, spend five minutes confirming it works:
- Open any post, view the page source, and search for
name="description",rel="canonical"andapplication/ld+json. You should find exactly one of each. - Open your sitemap (the
Sitemap:line inyoursite.com/robots.txttells you where it is) and click through to a child sitemap. - Make sure only one SEO plugin is active. Two plugins print two sets of tags, and duplicate meta output explains how to spot it.
