The Webmaster Tools screen (Hydrogen SEO, under Settings) is where you paste the verification codes that Google Search Console, Bing Webmaster Tools, Yandex Webmaster, Pinterest, Baidu and Naver give you when you add your site. Hydrogen SEO prints each code as a <meta> tag in the <head> of every front-end page, so you can switch back to the service and press its verify button straight away. No theme edits, no code snippets and no Hydrogen SEO account are needed. The screen arrived in version 0.0.27 and is free.
What verification is for
Every search engine's webmaster console shows private data: which queries you appear for, which pages are excluded and why, crawl errors, manual actions. Before showing any of it, the console needs proof that you control the site. One way to prove it is to put a short code, unique to your account, in a <meta> tag on your home page. The service fetches the page, finds the tag and grants you access.
The tag method is one of several. Each service also accepts other proofs, such as a DNS record or an uploaded file, and some of those cover cases the tag cannot (see when a tag is the wrong method). The tag is simply the quickest option when you can edit WordPress but not your DNS or server files.
The services and their tags
| Field on the screen | Tag name printed | Where the code comes from |
|---|---|---|
| Google Search Console | google-site-verification | A URL prefix property, verification method HTML tag |
| Bing Webmaster Tools | msvalidate.01 | Add your site and choose the meta tag option |
| Yandex Webmaster | yandex-verification | Add your site and choose the meta tag method |
p:domain_verify | Claim your website and choose the HTML tag option | |
| Baidu Search Resource Platform | baidu-site-verification | Add your site and choose HTML tag verification |
| Naver Search Advisor | naver-site-verification | Register your site and choose the HTML tag method |
Each field has an Open link to the service, and a one-line reminder of where the code is found until you fill it in.
You only need the services whose audience you care about. Most sites want Google and Bing. Yandex matters for Russian-speaking audiences, Naver for South Korea and Baidu for mainland China; Pinterest verification is for sites whose images get pinned, since claiming the site attributes those Pins to your Pinterest profile.
Add a code
- In the service, add your site and choose the HTML tag (meta tag) method. It shows a line like
<meta name="google-site-verification" content="AbC123…" />. - In wp-admin, open Hydrogen SEO → Webmaster Tools.
- Paste into the matching field. Either the whole
<meta>tag or just the value of itscontentattribute works. The field shows exactly what you pasted, and the code is saved straight away, with no button to press: from a pasted tag, only the code inside it is kept. When you click out of the field, a pasted tag is shown as the code it was reduced to, and under the field you see the exact tag that will be printed. - Back in the service, click its verify button.
Paste the code only into the field for the service that issued it. A Bing code in the Google field prints a tag Google never looks for.
What counts as a code
A code is a single token of letters, digits and a few punctuation characters (-, _, ., :, = and +), at most 100 characters long. Anything else shows That isn't a verification code, so it isn't saved; the code saved before stays in place. Paste only the code, or the whole <meta> tag. under the field (the middle part appears only when there was a saved code). The invalid text is never saved: the service keeps the code it had, or stays empty if it had none, and the other services' codes save as normal. This catches the usual paste mistakes, such as copying a DNS record, a whole HTML file or only half of the tag, before a broken tag reaches your pages.
To remove a tag, clear the field.
What ends up on your pages
The tags are printed inside Hydrogen SEO's head block, after the robots meta tag and before the canonical link:
<!-- Hydrogen SEO Plugin v0.0.27 - https://hydrogenseo.com -->
<meta name="robots" content="index, follow" />
<meta name="google-site-verification" content="AbC123exampleCode" />
<meta name="msvalidate.01" content="0123456789ABCDEF0123456789ABCDEF" />
<link rel="canonical" href="https://example.com/" />
…
<!-- / Hydrogen SEO -->
To check, open your home page in a private window, view the source and search for the tag name. It has to be in the HTML the server sends, which is exactly where Hydrogen SEO puts it; no JavaScript is involved.
Keep the codes after verifying
Leave each code in place for as long as you use that service. Verification is not a one-time event:
- Google checks periodically that the token is still present. If it disappears, you are notified, and once a grace period passes your permissions on the property lapse.
- Yandex checks the code regularly and automatically, treats the site as unverified if it is missing at a check, and recommends never deleting it.
Removing the code from this screen, deactivating the plugin or switching to a theme that does not call wp_head() all take the tag off your pages. If you move away from Hydrogen SEO, copy the codes somewhere first, or verify again by DNS before you switch. Coming the other way, Import SEO Data brings the verification codes from your previous SEO plugin into this screen.
Bing: importing from Search Console instead
Bing Webmaster Tools can import sites you have already verified in Google Search Console. You sign in with your Google account, pick the sites and Bing adds them as verified, no tag required. Bing keeps rechecking ownership through that Google connection, so if you later revoke its access you need another method, such as the msvalidate.01 tag on this screen.
Either route works. Use the import when you manage several sites in Search Console; use the tag when the Google account and the Bing account belong to different people.
When a tag is the wrong method
- Google Domain properties (
example.comcovering every subdomain plushttpandhttps) can only be verified with a DNS record. The HTML tag works for URL prefix properties only, one exact address such ashttps://www.example.com/. - The home page needs a login. A coming-soon or maintenance mode that hides the home page from logged-out visitors also hides the tag from the verifier. Google requires the tag on the home page as a logged-out visitor sees it.
- The address is not the live one. Codes are tied to the address you entered in the service. Verify the production URL, with or without
wwwexactly as visitors reach it, not a staging copy.
Troubleshooting
The service says the tag was not found. Most often a page cache or CDN is serving HTML from before you saved. Purge it, then view the source again in a private window. If the tag is still missing, check that the theme's header.php calls wp_head(), since every plugin's head output depends on it.
The service found the wrong code. Another plugin or the theme may print its own tag with the same name. Several tags with the same name can sit side by side, since each owner of a property can have a token of their own, but a leftover code from an old account only confuses things. Remove it from the other tool.
The field says "That isn't a verification code". It contains something other than a code, so it was not saved. If there was a code before, that one is still saved and printed; if not, the service has no tag on your pages until you fix the box. Paste again from the service, either the full tag or only the value between the quotes after content=.
FAQ
Do I need a Hydrogen SEO account for Webmaster Tools?
No. The screen works with the free plugin and no account. It only prints tags in your own pages; nothing is sent anywhere.
Does the tag go on every page or only the home page?
Every front-end page: the home page the services check, posts and pages, archives and the 404 page. The tags are a few bytes each and harmless outside the home page.
Can I verify with more than one service at once?
Yes. Fill in as many fields as you like; each is saved as you go. Each service only reads its own tag.
Does verifying change my rankings?
No. Verification gives you access to the console's reports and tools, such as sitemap submission and URL inspection. It has no effect on ranking by itself.
