The Social screen holds the site-wide settings for how your pages appear when shared and how your site is tied to its social accounts: whether Open Graph and X (Twitter) card tags are printed at all, the default share image, your X username and Facebook App ID, and the list of social profiles that go into your Organization schema. Per-post social titles, descriptions and images still live in each post's SEO Settings sheet; this screen supplies the defaults and the site identity behind them.

Open it from Hydrogen SEO → Social in wp-admin (in the Settings group of the sidebar).

Social meta tags

Two switches control whether social tags are printed anywhere on the site:

  • Open Graph tags. Prints the og:* tags (and article:* tags on posts) that Facebook, LinkedIn, Slack, WhatsApp and most other platforms read to build a share card. Switch it off and every og:* and article:* tag is removed from every page.
  • X (Twitter) card tags. Prints the twitter:* tags X reads for its cards. Switch it off and those tags are removed.

Leave both on unless another plugin or your theme is deliberately responsible for social tags. Two sources printing the same tags produce conflicting cards; see fixing duplicate meta output.

Default share image

The image used as og:image and twitter:image when a page has no social image or featured image of its own. Without one, platforms pick an image from the page themselves, and they usually pick badly.

  1. Click the image field to open the Media Library.
  2. Choose or upload an image. The recommended size is 1200×630 pixels (a 1.91:1 ratio), with any text large and centred.
  3. Save.

Use Replace to change it later. A post's own social image, set in its SEO Settings sheet, or its featured image always takes priority over this default.

Accounts

Who the site is on X and Facebook:

  • X username. Printed as twitter:site. Enter it with or without the @, or paste the profile URL; letters, numbers and underscores only, up to 15 characters. If you leave it empty and one of your social profiles (below) is an x.com profile URL, that account is used for twitter:site instead.
  • Facebook App ID. Printed as fb:app_id. Digits only. It is optional and only needed if you use Facebook Insights for your domain.

Social profiles

The URLs of the accounts that belong to your site or business:

  • Facebook page
  • Instagram
  • LinkedIn
  • YouTube
  • Pinterest
  • TikTok
  • Other profiles, one URL per line, for anything not listed above

These do two jobs:

  1. Organization schema. Every profile, plus your X account, is listed as sameAs in the site's Organization schema. The list is merged with the Organization sameAs URLs entered on the Schema screen, and duplicates are removed, so a profile entered in both places appears once. sameAs is how search engines and AI assistants connect your website to your accounts elsewhere; see schema markup overview.
  2. article:publisher. The Facebook page URL is also printed as article:publisher on posts.

Previews and validation

The screen shows a share-card preview, and the resulting sameAs list as it will appear in the Organization schema. Invalid values, such as a malformed URL or an App ID with letters in it, are flagged before you save.

Migrating from another SEO plugin

If you import from another SEO plugin with Tools → Import SEO Data, its social profile URLs, X username, Facebook App ID and default share image are imported into this screen. See switch from another SEO plugin.

FAQ

Where did the Social Profiles card on the Homepage screen go?

It moved here. The Homepage screen now points to Social, and all profile URLs are managed in one place.

Do I need to enter my profiles on both the Social screen and the Schema screen?

No. Either place is enough, because the two lists are merged into one de-duplicated sameAs list. Social is the simpler place to keep them.

Does turning off Open Graph tags affect my X cards?

It removes the og:* and article:* tags only. The twitter:* tags are controlled by their own switch. X can read Open Graph tags as a fallback, so with Open Graph off, keep the X card tags on if you want cards on X.

Does the default share image replace images I set on posts?

No. It is used only when a page has neither its own social image nor a featured image.

Do these settings need an account?

No. Everything on the Social screen works with no hydrogenseo.com account.
